KINSEY JACQUELINE SLOAN
FULL NAME: Kinsey Jacqueline Sloan.
NICKNAMES: Kins, Kinsey-Jay, Sloan.
AGE: twenty-five.
SEXUALITY: straight.
STATUS: single
GROUP: citizen
GRADE: N/A.
MAJOR: N/A
JOB OCCUPATION: Landscape Architect.
HAIR: She has blonde hair that is usually scraped back into a messy bun or braid when she’s working. It’s long and past her shoulders and just falls pretty straight when it’s down. She’s forever threatening to chop it all off, but she never goes through with it..
EYES: brown.
SCARS/BIRTHMARKS: There’s one on her left leg, just above her ankle. It’s not big at all and usually only noticed when she points it out or someone is looking in that area. It’s from a snake bite. Other than that, it’s just the usual faint ones from being outdoors and working with her hands a lot..
TATTOOS: She has a forget-me-not tattoo on her right foot..
PIERCINGS: Ears twice
PLAY-BY: Alona Tal!
LIKES: gardening, being outdoors, fresh flowers, hard work, passionate people, hand cream, long bubble baths, hiking, hot summers, dinosaurs, growing her own fruit and veg, late night talk shows, softball, chocolate fudge, Corona, architecture, massages, chai lattes, collecting fossils, forests, swimming in lakes, reading, bubble chairs, hammocks, hiking, zip wires, ginger, foxes.
DISLIKES: losing bobby pins/hair ties, walking in super high heels, onesies, waking up before her body feels ready, pulling a muscle, sunburn, rats, being underestimated, relying on other people, gory movies, hospitals, arrogant men, overgrown gardens, peanut butter, being stuck in traffic, busted radios, late night phone calls, autocorrect, inconsiderate neighbours, hurricanes, venomous snakes.
FEARS: hurricanes, rats, getting stabbed.
SECRETS: She tends to keep her fossil collection a secret. It’s something she started when she was four and has continued with over the years, but after too many friends mocked it and called it “weird” and “geeky”, she stopped sharing it with people. She still adds to it now and gets excited over anything dinosaur related, but she tries to keep it to herself. Those so called “friends” kind of ruined that love for her..
PERSONALITY: Kinsey definitely thrives when she’s outdoors and is often told she has green fingers for the amount of time she’ll spend around flowers and plants of any kind. She prefers being out in the sun, digging in the dirt and tending to the gardens. She’s dedicated and hard working and isn’t the kind of girl who will use an excuse or slack off when there is work to be done. Usually, someone has to drag her away from her job when she’s injured or exhausted because Kinsey doesn’t see either as a reason to quit. Hands on and independent, Kinsey isn’t the type of girl to rely on others or easily accept someone else’s help. Growing up it had been a way of proving herself as equal as her cousins and now it’s purely so that she can be taken seriously in a job that she’s found to be male dominated. Quick thinking is another way to describe Kinsey. She has a dry wit that she’s picked up from working around certain people and often her comebacks are dry or intended to wound someone’s ego, especially if it’s a man being a sexist ass. Despite choosing to work outdoors and with her hands, Kinsey is intelligent and studious, earning her way into an Ivy League school. She worked hard at school throughout her life because her parents always encouraged it, but she also enjoyed learning new things and took pride in earning an A on an exam or assignment. She’s a tough girl, both mentally and physically. It takes a lot to get her to admit to being in pain or being bad at something, so people often call her stubborn, too. Even if it’s obvious to everyone around her that she’s pulled her back she still won’t admit to it! Kinsey has a deeply hidden nerd inside of her who enjoys collecting fossils and getting giddy over dinosaur exhibits and shows. She doesn’t know where it came from, but it’s been there ever since she was a little girl. She’s got a feminine side to her, too. As for confrontations, it’s usually her lack of verbal filter that gets her into trouble. She’s usually said something that’s been overheard that causes any of the fights she can recall. She doesn’t mean to start them, but she won’t back down and cower either. As for romance, Kinsey likes to put it all out there. She’s no time for games and childish behaviour. Sometimes she comes across as being blunt, but she’d rather skip the chase! She’s not interesting in sappy love stories or grand over-the-top gestures, but she does like a guy to surprise her from time to time!

HISTORY: Calvin ran the Pine Creek Lodge & Resort with his brothers. Previously owned by his grandparents, the three grandsons had inherited the property and the land with the passing of their grandmother, three years after her husband. Calvin’s mother had no interest in running the business herself, but only stayed on as one of the housekeeping staff to keep her hands busy. Between the three of them, they got the place up and running, working on the repairs themselves and dividing the business up to their own areas of expertise. Vincent was the best at handling the accounts and the paperwork, Lee had the better people skills and Calvin had been an expert at building and construction for most of his life.
Calvin met Viv when they employed more housekeeping staff. He actually scared her half to death when he dropped down from the attic of the cabin she had been cleaning. After staying around until she had calmed down and could laugh about it, it became a sort of inside joke between the two of them. Calvin was the one who actually spent the most time around the staff they employed since he was forever popping into cabins to check things or was working outside when they walked by. Viv took a special place in his heart though and after brotherly teasing and torment, he finally built up the courage to ask her out while they were along one day. There were hiccups here and there in the relationship, but Calvin knew that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with Vivienne and soon arranged a romantic evening by the lake that was complete with a diamond ring. A family filled wedding and short honeymoon to Hawaii and then they were back to the resort and their new family lodge set a little further back than the guest cabins. It was only a few more weeks of normal married life before Viv got the news from her doctor that she was pregnant.
The family jokingly made bets and acted as though they were preparing for the arrival of another boy. Lee and Vincent had welcomed sons of their own in recent years and they were caught a little by surprise when Viv gave birth to a healthy baby girl. It was the first, but definitely not the last time that young Kinsey would surprise her uncles and cousins. She was a happy, healthy baby who would be outside more often than not when Calvin was around. They lived in such a beautiful location on the edge of a National Park that he wanted Kinsey to see it all as often as she could, even if she was too young to appreciate it.
Growing up, she loved following her dad around the small woodland resort. He let her carry the safer tools from time to time and showed her how to neaten up the flowerbeds, just the little things when she wasn’t in school. At school, she made excellent grades and impressed her teachers more often than not. Given half the chance she would much rather be outside and helping her dad around Pine Creek, but school wasn’t as bad as some kids acted like it was. Her little brother, Hunter, had come along when Kins was just two and he was the last child of that generation to be born into the Sloan family, making Kinsey the only girl. When they were little, her cousins thought it funny to challenge and tease Kinsey because of this, trying to insinuate that she couldn’t do half of the things they could because she was a girl. What Jesse and Charlie didn’t expect was for Kinsey to rise to every challenge, sometimes losing, but sometimes winning. She was a tough little thing and tried not to show her weaknesses in front of them, much to Calvin’s pride. He had been afraid for a little longer than he had let on that the joking nature of his family would leave Kinsey upset more times than he cared to see. It looked like his little girl could hold her own, though; something she proved even more as the years went by.
Kinsey loved hard work and once her homework was out of the way for the evening she would be out there with her dad and the rest of her family lending a hand where it was needed. She much preferred digging out the holes for new plants and shrubs over a night in watching TV. If she wasn’t needed of an evening, then she took advantage of the great outdoors that the small resort offered, such as the lake and tiny beach, private for the seasonal guests. It was down on the shore that she could sometimes find old fossils and ever since her dad introduced them to her when she was a tiny girl, she had been addicted to collecting them and finding out what they could be. By the time her teenage years rolled around she knew the place better than anyone and even had her own little hideaways to escape to when her cousins and brother really did get under her skin. She was up with the sun to help her dad out before school and during the holidays she practically ran around the site doing anything she could. She loved getting in there and getting her hands dirty and her father and uncles were more than happy to leave some of the tasks to her, especially when it came to arranging the plants and re-designing the layout each year. She did just as much work as her cousins and even though they did get along pretty well by this point, there was still that teasing and daring aspect to their friendship that cropped up almost every day and had someone throwing a bucket of water over another before the sun had set.
None of her older cousins went away to university. Jesse had done a short stint at a community college just for some business knowledge, but he’d lived at home and continued to work throughout. Charlie had no intention of continuing his education beyond high school, but he would stay with the family and do the work he had always helped to do. Her uncles seem to take it as a given that Kinsey would do the same, because their jaws almost hit the floor when she mentioned the conversations with her teachers, her grades and the idea of attending an Ivy League school. Throughout her life, Kinsey had kept her academic achievements quiet. She had studied hard for the subjects that needed it, put in the extra hours to ensure she kept her good grades and stayed up late some nights to add finishing touches to essays. She just didn’t complain or make a big deal out of it. The day Kinsey received her acceptance letter from her first choice school, Cornell, Calvin actually cried. The only thing that didn’t shock him was Kinsey’s choice in her major; Landscape Architecture. They had a huge party down by the lake the night before Kinsey was due to leave for school and plenty of photographs arrived a few weeks after she moved into the dorms, just to remind her of that night and the family that missed her.
Cornell was exactly as she imagined and so much more. She made great friends, despite being so far from home and being homesick. Her course was hard work, just how she liked it and it gave her a chance to discover and work with more tools and mix the skills she already had with new ones that she only got to learn once she arrived at Cornell. The first two years passed by without incident and full of the chaotic student lifestyle that she had come to love. She had a job at a Garden Centre to pay her way, which not only spared her the majority of the phone calls home to borrow money, but also gave her even more of a reason to live and breathe nature and plants. For her third year, she was advised to look at the semester abroad options. Kinsey chose to head to Cape Town, South Africa for the spring semester.
It was amazing and more than she ever expected. It was an opportunity she could never regret and she got to see so much out there. One day she was out in the field for one of her classes when she missed spying an African puff adder in the long grass. She was bitten just above the ankle and taken to hospital. The venomous poison wasn’t fast acting, but it was still in her system and she still needed emergency attention. It wasn’t the best moment of her trip and her dad worried the second he heard the news, but Kinsey didn’t let it ruin the rest of her time in Cape Town. In fact, she went out there with just as much enthusiasm and gusto as on the very day she had arrived. Part of her was sad when the day came that she had to head for the airport again.
Back in America she finished off her college education and then returned home for the summer. It was during this time, back on the resort that she put some of her good ideas into practice as they revamped Pine Creek. She also met Demi during this time, too and took an instant dislike to the girl, even if she had been dating her little brother for the last six months. She had moved to the area with her family and lived just forty minutes from the family property, but she seemed very haughty and often looked on when people around her were clearly struggling. Kinsey didn’t expect her to get her hands dirty in the soil or do any of the hard laborious tasks, but she thought it common politeness to help someone with heavy sacks or to carry a beam if it looked like they were having a bit of trouble. It only got worse when they discovered that Demi had slept with some other guy from her old high school while she was dating Hunter. Instantly Kinsey wanted him to end things and to send her packing, but Hunter took the time and forgave Demi, buying the apology that Kinsey thought was nothing but fake. With that relationship back on track, Kinsey wasted no time in making her own opinions very clear. She originally planned on staying with the family, but with Demi around constantly and walking all over Hunter like he was a doormat, Kinsey was losing her cool.
It was around this time that she received an offer too good to be true. A landscaping firm in New York had seen her handiwork and her portfolio and wished to invite her along to interview for them. They dealt with a lot of privately owned properties, put on a few displays a year and had a few public contracts in the pipeline. If she got the job, it would be a fantastic opportunity and it seemed to come right when Kinsey needed it the most. She made the trip to New York City and breezed through the interview process. They offered her the job and explained that she’d work under a more experienced landscape architect for a while and then they’d start handing her some of her own jobs. She found herself a small apartment, worked hard and after roughly a year of learning the ropes and the processes that went into each job from start to finish, she got a small contract of her own. It was nothing overly fantastic, just a rooftop garden for an apartment building. It was her first job on her own though and they handed her one of the young workers to lend her a hand.
After that, it seemed like she had found her calling. Sometimes she worked as part of a large team, other times it was a solo venture. It all varied depending on the contract, but Kinsey was a hard worker and she adored her career from the moment it took off. It became harder to find the time to return home, but she made the effort for every holiday and got a few weekends and the odd week here and there. Even when she was at home she wanted to work, though. Hunter is still dating Demi, much to Kinsey’s dismay, but she still opens her mouth and expresses her dislike. Jesse and Charlie do the same, but are a little more subtle than Kinsey is, so they get away with it more. Kinsey is generally pretty darn happy with the way everything is turning out in her life, but she’s still working hard and determined to find more with it!
