FEARS: Dying, geese, flying.
SECRETS: Casper is sick, and he’s in New York for treatment. He’s not told anyone because he honestly doesn’t know if he’s going to make it. He doesn’t want the fuss or the worry, but he knows he can’t hide it forever. Especially not when his sister is in the city, too.
PERSONALITY: Casper has always been a quiet guy, always with his head in a book. He’s shy but friendly, though he’s often preferred to keep himself for no other reason than he’s just not as sociable as some. He prefers his own company and a night in with a book or a movie over heading out to a bar with friends. He’s not one for making lifelong friends, as many get bored with his introverted demeanour after a while, but Cas has always had someone to turn to if he’s needed them. He’s easily embarrassed and not a confident guy. Most of the time he’s a bit of an awkward goof though that’s not an intentional trait at all. Cas has got a heart of gold and he’s pretty clever, but it can take a while for that to come across to someone new in his life. He’s not a big talker, and definitely more of a listener, though pick the right conversation topic and he can hold a detailed discussion for hours on end. Independent, Cas doesn’t feel as though he needs to rely on anyone for anything, and it’s been that way for many years. He got a job as soon as he was old enough and has worked ever since, so he’s not a stranger to supporting himself. He’s a family guy, though he’s never been in a rush to settle down; he’d actually rather see his sister do that first so he could spoil some nieces and nephews. He’s athletic but he’s only a hockey fan. Cas doesn’t confront people and can find himself in tricky situations where he’s not comfortable. As for love, he’s not confident and he’s far from Prince Charming, though he has always dreamt about finding his true love one day. He’s a bit of a dreamer like that, though he’s scared now that he may never have that chance.MOTHER: Filomena Isabella Hastings (nee De La Fuente) & 54.
FATHER: Alexander Johnathan Hastings & 59.
SIBLINGS: Hadley Bronwyn Hastings & 27
OTHERS: N/A.

HOMETOWN: Stockholm, Sweden.
HISTORY: The fateful day on which Mena and Alex met is a story that Casper heard countless times when he was growing up. He asked for it most of the time, purely because he found it cemented his belief that everything happened for a reason. If his father hadn’t been in a bad mood that afternoon then he may not have stayed at that café after his meeting and then he would never have met Casper’s mother and then neither he nor his older sister would exist. It might have sounded like a silly idea to someone else, but that was what Cas thought every time he heard the story, listened to how they were married within two years and how Hadley and Casper followed not too long after that. To him, it all made sense and it was all part of a plan much greater than he could ever come to understand.
Casper’s childhood was incident free mostly. He had a good relationship with his parents and with Hadley, and things were great elsewhere. As a kid, Casper didn’t really pay much attention to books, but his talent was in painting. He enjoyed the arts as much as his sister did, but that eventually changed when he broke his leg playing hockey when he was eleven. Being laid up meant he couldn’t really paint as much as he wanted to, and it was a neighbour who lent him some books to pass the time with. Cas was swept into a world of imagination and adventure that he had never experienced with a canvas or oils before. It wasn’t long before he thought of them as the greatest thing, and he was spending his allowance on more books, and Alex had to put up shelves in his bedroom for the quickly growing collection. His talent for art slipped while his love of reading grew. With that love, Cas also became more introverted. The only thing he didn’t let up on was his hockey games and training. However, he would forgo hanging out with friends after school to come home and read instead, or watch a movie with Hadley when she wasn’t busy. He had friends, but very few of them stuck around when he chose his own company over theirs.
Cas made it through his younger years unscathed. Nothing remarkable happened. He grew up like most kids; made mistakes, dabbled at dating, and got caught up in unwanted high school drama. Nothing exceptional happened and he left high school with grades that got him into a good university not all that far from home. It was far enough away that he could fend for himself, but not so far that he couldn’t head home spontaneously if he felt like a home cooked meal, or if he needed to pick something up from his old bedroom. Four years later, Cas graduated from there. He had made it through university without getting caught up in wild parties or lost in the stress like some of his classmates had done. His degree was in Literature, which seemed apt for the young man who was always reading books and had built his own miniature library by this point in his life.
After graduation, Cas found work in a library, which was pretty much his dream come true. His life was simple and he enjoyed it that way. After Hadley had gone to New York, he was pretty much the kind of guy who went about his business and then went on home to read and to cook himself dinner. He didn’t get caught up in life, or let it drag him down. Cas carried on like that, only really going out when people dragged him out or when he did have the rare date with a pretty girl who he had met in work. Nothing ever came from it since Cas wasn’t really the type of guy any of them seemed to be looking for in their lives. He wasn’t quite as alluring as they seemed to want him to be unfortunately.
Casper was twenty-five when he noticed that he was having troubles with his health. His usual hockey nights were tough, his breathing difficult to handle even after a simple task, and he was forced to take breaks more often than he would like to. A tightness in his chest and a cough he couldn’t explain came and never went away and eventually Casper had no choice but to go to his doctor. His doctor referred him to the hospital and Cas found himself subjected to a series of tests. While he was waiting on the results he noticed his health declining more. When his doctor did sit him down it wasn’t good news. Casper had an atrial myxoma, but the actual positioning of it was difficult. Surgery was the only option to remove the tumour in his heart, but if the surgeon didn’t get all of it then it would come back again. The placement of Casper’s on the scans was proving a problem for the cardiologists. They told him that they could remove what they could, but that he would find himself under the knife again most likely before he was thirty. His other option was to seek treatment elsewhere, and his doctor knew of another who was more likely to be able to pull off a successful surgery. She was in New York City though.
It was a big decision. Casper had told no one of his illness, passing it all off as a chest infection when anyone expressed concern. New York, however, was an entirely different story. It was where Hadley was, and while it was a big city he couldn’t hide from her. He knew their parents would tell her if he didn’t. Still, his health demanded this from him and the pros most definitely outweighed the cons. So, he resigned from his librarian position, sold his apartment in Stockholm, and made all the arrangements to move to NYC. Within his first few days he was in a new apartment, and had spoken to his new doctor who was confident, harsher than he was expecting, but who also revealed that he might need more surgery that the doctors back home had informed him of. She wanted to run her own tests, but she was almost entirely certain that he would need the mitral valve replaced while they had his chest open. There was no saying how long the tumour had been in his heart for, but she told him it had done the damage she didn’t like to see.
Casper is now waiting for those tests, the next step, and to see what fate might throw at him now. He’s not reached out to his big sister yet, but he knows he’ll have to come up with some reason to be in NYC. He doesn’t want to worry her with the truth, but he knows he can’t hide away with his books for this one.
