SECRETS: He was drafted to play for the New York Giants as a running back. A nasty tackle and a double tear in two of the main ligaments of his left knee ended his pro-football career after only two seasons. If people recognise him he’s friendly enough about it, but he doesn’t really like talking about it otherwise, or bringing the topic up himself. After all, it had been his dream to play professionally and he barely got a taste of that.
PERSONALITY: Jude is one of the strong and silent type. He’s a sociable guy, but he doesn’t often share personal stories or thoughts, usually trying to keep everything kind of light and trivial. He likes to avoid questions about his past and might come across as guarded; it’s happened once or twice where people have assumed there’s a much darker history behind his blue eyes than there really is. Jude is quite resolute and set in his ways, pushing himself to the limit even when there is really no need to. He’s athletic, refusing to let himself slack off. He’s very determined and rarely accepts no for an answer. Jude is pretty hard on himself usually saves his frustration for himself and it’s not very often that anyone else manages to push his buttons. He’s got a great deal of self-control and calm about him; it’s probably his greatest quality. For that same reason, he’s a solid peacekeeper and usually mediates any situations as best as he can. He might not be the most outgoing of men, but he’s fairly charismatic under most circumstances, so long as there’s not too much pressure on him; when that happens, it becomes obvious that he’s nervous. Not a romantic by nature, Jude does have a kind heart and a sweet side that he does keep for those who wrestle their way into his heart.

HISTORY: ”An engineer and a social secretary walk into a bar…” Tara was aware from the start that her initial meeting with Malcolm almost sounded like the start of a very bad joke. However, it was pretty much the truth. They did walk into a bar and then she proceeded to spill her drink on him and make a complete fool out of herself while she was trying to apologise and make up for the little accident. Malcolm found it very endearing, actually, thought the young secretary with chopsticks in her hair was one of the best things to ever walk into his favourite bar. Meeting her was the greatest thing to ever happen to him and it was through that meeting that they eventually fell in love. It was their local “go to” bar after a long day at work and while they went with their separate group of friends, they often wound up chatting alone at the bar until one night Malcolm walked her home and turned their thin friendship into something more and wonderful.
Almost two years to the evening that they met, Malcolm dropped to one knee hoping to surprise Tara with a beautiful diamond ring. However, that same night, Tara had her own surprise for him; she was pregnant. It was a wonderfully happy coincidence and one that their friends enjoyed joking and laughing about, but the couple had never felt happier. Jude came along one inconvenient afternoon when Malcolm was out of reach and Tara had been on her way to pick up the final things for her son’s arrival. Jude was an eager little baby and arrived a week earlier than expected without any warning signs at all for the expectant mother to follow – and she had read all the books and been to all the classes to prepare for her first birth! He was a happy, active little baby who couldn’t stop crawling once he started. The adults were forever snatching him up before he could have himself an accident or got his hands on something he shouldn’t.
He toddled down the aisle when his parents got married, wearing a tiny cute suit to match his father. Jude can recall hating the darn thing, and there are a number of photos where he is definitely pouting and looking a little more disappointed than anyone should look at a wedding, but luckily for him, he was adorable at that age and could probably get away with murder. A few months after the wedding, Tara announced her second pregnancy. Jude soon found himself as the big brother to a lively little sister; Aly.
It was obvious from a very young age that Jude was going to be an athletic guy. He was forever asking for sports equipment and racing around the yard while nagging his parents into letting him play almost every sport possible. Once school started for him, it was a passion that grew more and even the teachers commented on his enthusiasm for all things active. Jude loved sitting down with his dad and watching the sports channels, learning the rules and the names of players of pretty much every team sport going. He was definitely more athletic than he was academic, but he still managed to maintain a nice average during his hours in a classroom, trying to keep him mind on the textbooks and the lessons rather than on the sports practice that came after the final bell rang.
It was a phase that he never grew out of. High school made him more competitive and dedicated and Jude focused most of his attention on his football skills. He kept up running, swimming and various other activities outside of school, but he was a running back on the team and it was a position he worked hard to improve at. His coach had a lot of faith in him and pushed him hard to keep improving himself, and in the end it paid off because he was offered a scholarship to Louisiana State; something his family celebrated with a massive street party blowout and too much cake for it to ever be healthy.
He knew the next four years as the greatest and the toughest of his life. College football was definitely tougher than high school and he had to maintain decent grades in his classes and no excuse was acceptable for some of his professors. He majored in biology, but his dream was to continue with football and play at a professional level. It wouldn’t be an easy dream and he was pushed to his limit time and time again by his coach as LSU. He had a great social life, too and really embraced the student life of parties, fun and panic when an assignment or test deadline seemed to spring up from nowhere.
It seemed as though fate was shining kindly on him and that his hard work and commitment to the sport had paid off. After graduation and after much anticipation and nerves, Jude was drafted to play for the New York Giants. His initial reaction was not something that could ever be printed and Tara was swatting at her son with a dishcloth for the language coming out of his mouth as he spun Aly around the kitchen they had grown up in. He was so ridiculously excited that he could hardly keep up with himself for a little while after it happened, but soon enough he was the kid whose dreams were coming true and who could barely believe this was even happening to him.
His first season, he showed great potential and promise. Jude’s name cropped up enough for people to start paying attention and he definitely worked hard to earn his spot on that team. A new “up and comer” in the game, his second season began with a wonderful high. Jude was in prime physical condition and things seemed to just keep getting better and better for the young football star. Then, the hopes and promise of a name for the history books crashed and burned, with sports commentators calling it “a real tragedy”. The penultimate game of the season and Jude went in for a tackle; nothing risky and something he had done countless times before, but this time the simple move went awry and he ended up on the grass and he didn’t get up when everyone expected him to. Jude had heard the pop as he hit the ground and the pain just ricocheted through his leg. When he tried to stand, he couldn’t and he was carried off the field for medical assessment where they found the tears to two of the ligaments in his knee – the ACL and the MCL. Treatment, surgery and recovery were exhaustive and Jude hardly felt great about it all. He knew before his coach had to tell him that things were bad. He could have returned to the game after intense physiotherapy, but he knew that he had a weakness now and that his position as running back would only make him more prone to recurring knee problems. Jude wanted to play the game, not dabble with it and then watch from the sidelines or a hospital bed. People tried to talk him out of the decision, but Jude made one final press release and announced his retirement from the game, almost breaking down afterwards. It had been his dream, but the injury was severe and while he recovered without any obvious signs of ever having the damage, he still felt the twinges after too much activity and they served as a reminder of why he did what he did. Jude went out with his name still known, rather than as a fading player who didn’t know when to quit.
For a time, he stayed in New York and did nothing but mope and dwell on the loss of his dream. Aly came to stay with her brother for a little bit, but she had her own life to eventually chase and returned to Connecticut to do just that. Jude had never really thought about back up plans and while he did have his college diploma in biology, he didn’t really know what to do with it. Most of the jobs Malcolm sent to him were office or lab based and Jude was so used to being active and constantly doing something physical that the thought of sitting around like that did not appeal to him at all. He wanted to keep his strength up, to keep living an active life with a physical job, but he just didn’t know what to do until an old team mate made the suggestion of becoming a personal trainer or something within the sporting profession. Jude wanted to keep away from football since he was still in mourning over his short lived career, but it was still an idea that lingered. He took a college course to earn the certification and then started off at a gym.
He spent a year there, helping other people achieve their fitness goals and it allowed him to keep up with his own desired active lifestyle. It was just after a year passed that another friend approached him and asked him if he’d help train his younger brother; a college kid who wanted to get fit but lacked the motivation to do it alone. This set Jude off working away from the gym, taking the young man on runs through the city and cornering him on campus if he tried to slack off without a valid excuse. It led to more people asking about his job and eventually he had a clientele that didn’t centre round the gym. He quit there and focused on his own private business, accepting clients and building quite a solid reputation for himself. Nothing will ever beat the rush of the football field and the pain of losing that won’t entirely leave him, but this is the next best thing as far as Jude is concerned.
