If anyone had told Taylor she would be spending Christmas with Damien, far from New York City, she might have laughed in their faces and told them to get real. It was the sort of thing she might have fantasised about when she was eighteen, but had forced herself to forget about in all the years that had followed. She still found it surreal when she woke up next to him, and the goofy smile crossed her face when he text her just to say that he loved her or was thinking about her. Taylor felt like some lovesick teenager and she didn’t feel in the least bit sorry for it. All of this had been a long time coming. The only thing that bit at her was that someone had been hurt before they had reached this point of realisation, but there was nothing Taylor could do to change that. She had apologised for what had happened to Drake, but he was the one who had refused to accept her apology and who had left the hospital before she could do anything else to try and make it up to him. Worrying about it now would do no one any good at all.
When Damien had first suggested going away for the holidays Taylor had tossed out the suggestion. She spent Christmas with her dad without fail. As good as a romantic getaway with Damien sounded, the thought of abandoning her father filled her with a horror only a daughter could comprehend. However, Captain Becks was having none of it. His sixth sense was tingling when he had spoken to the mortician next and she had confessed everything to him. It was her dad who had told her to stop being silly and to grow up. She was stunned into silence, but the retired Captain reassured her that he would spend the holidays with his sisters in Jersey and she ought to go and enjoy some time with Damien because “god knows you two have some time to make up”. With nervous butterflies she had told Damien that they had her father’s blessing, no, orders, to go away for Christmas. After that came the hours in front of the computer screen trying to choose the perfect destination. They wanted to find a place that they could make theirs and love. It took a lot of effort and endless searching before they finally found a place, but eventually, and right before Taylor was about to suggest opening up a map and throwing a dart at it, they stumbled across a resort in Lapland that came complete with log cabins, igloos, and plenty of wintery, wonderful things. Taylor brought up memories from their own childhoods about Christmas and Santa Claus and somehow this seemed like the perfect combination of their Christmas pasts and their futures.
The journey was tiring, but when they arrived Taylor knew that it had been worth every minute of it. The plan was to stay for ten days. The first seven in one of the log cabins, and the final two in one of the glass igloos that boasted a view of the aurora borealis. Taylor had always wanted to see it and a trip to Norway when she was in medical school had failed to achieve that. She had her fingers crossed that this time they’d be successful. Tired, but full of excitement, she looped her arm through Damien’s as they trekked through the snow to the door of their assigned cabin, the key in her gloved hand. A member of the staff unloaded their luggage from a snow mobile and carried it to the door for them while Taylor unlocked it and stepped inside, gasping at how incredible it was. She knew the images the website boasted, but she never actually expected it to match up perfectly. “Oh, wow, this is just incredible!” She beamed, turning back to Damien. She tugged off her gloves and scarf and helped him lift the cases into their temporary home for the next week. “I’m so glad we did this now.” She admitted, even though she’d been having second thoughts for weeks ever since they had booked the trip.

Taking Taylor away for Christmas was more than a dream come true for Damien. It was something he never thought would happen in a million years. After everything that the fates had thrown at them Damien still thought he would wake up to discover that this life he was building with the beautiful doctor was nothing more than a wild dream, fuelled by unrequited love. So far that hadn’t happened, and it seemed that Lady Luck had finally decided to give his heart the break it needed. There was only so much a man could take in life, and when it came to matters of love Damien had almost reached his quota. The fact that all of it was centred round the woman who had once been the girl next door was irrelevant. At least it had been until now. Now they could laugh about it because they finally had each other after years of bad timing and miscommunication. And now, with the blessing of Taylor’s intimidating father, Damien finally got to treat the woman he loved to a vacation she deserved.
He wanted it to be more than just a scrapbook memory. Damien wanted it to be something they would grow old recalling, maybe even return to a few more times for special occasions when the years reached them. This trip was going to be the first of many romantic vacations and Taylor deserved to be spoilt beyond belief. The woman had been through enough in life, and shielded herself away for too long. He wanted to help her unfurl her wings and fly again. Being in love with Taylor Becks already promised one heck of a ride, but he wanted to add more loops and twists to it so that they would never be bored; though he doubted that either of them could be. In all of the time that he had known Taylor, which was her entire life, he had never once found himself growing tired of the brunette. There was always something exciting happening, a crazy venture just around the corner that they could embark upon. Damien doubted their future together would be any different.
Damien had prepared everything for this trip, though he knew Taylor’s spontaneity would mean several of his plans would never come to fruition. He didn’t mind that so long as his girlfriend was happy. He had been buying her practical gifts up until their departure from New York, like snow boots and new gloves, joking that none of these came close to the Christmas present that he had tucked away in his suitcase. Wrapping his arms around Taylor once they were inside the stunning cabin, and their home for the next seven nights, Damien smiled down at the giddy brunette. “Me, too. You deserve this, Becks. More than anyone I know, you deserve this.” He told her honestly, pressing his lips to hers before reluctantly letting her go again. Damien tipped the resort worker who had helped with their bags, and then pulled their luggage to the side, eyeing it up before glancing back towards the empty fireplace. “How about you start unpacking and I’ll get this fire going and make us some hot chocolate to get this vacation started?” He suggested, ”after that we can look through the brochures and you can get giddy over everything again.” Taylor had already pointed to everything she had wanted to do on the website, and he had seen the language books tucked into her handbag and resting on the bedside table for the last three weeks nearly. That was probably a good thing, since the language barrier had slipped his mind while he was out looking for the perfect present for the stunning mortician. At least he could rely on Taylor to be prepared when he wasn’t. It was yet another way in which they complemented each other perfectly.

This vacation was beyond her wildest dreams. Taylor would never have come here by herself or with a friend. This was the sort of place saved for true love and the type of thing she had spent the last few years avoiding, right up until Damien crashed back into her daily life. Now it was the perfect getaway from New York City and Taylor was currently trying to work out if the resort always seemed this magical or if it was just the time of year adding to the illusion. Either way, she didn’t care. The butterflies were whirling up in her stomach and she was just excited to be here with Damien. It promised to be a perfect trip and there was no unnecessary baggage or drama following them. The one thing about her relationship with the law professor was that there were no secrets. Damien knew everything about her. He had been there for ever poignant moment of her life, she had turned to him when she had needed someone, and now he was the man who held her heart. Taylor found comfort in knowing that there were no ghosts, no demons that could chase them down and threaten what they had together.
Her green eyes glanced over everything in the cabin, and she trekked snow towards the kitchen table where the brochures and guides were neatly arranged before their arrival. There would be time to look at them later, but Taylor was feeling like Christmas morning had already arrived and she didn’t know which present to open first. There was so much to do here, so much to see, and she didn’t want to miss any of it. Tay had never been that girl who could go away and spend days just lying about on the beach wasting away the hours. She might set aside the last day for that sort of thing, but the rest of the time she wanted to take everything in and come home with more experiences and knowledge than she ought to be able to handle. “Thanks for talking me into this.” She whispered, pulling Damien back for one more kiss before she released him to tip the resort colleague. Shedding her coat and gloves, she placed them on the coat rack and the table, respectively, and then smiled at their home for the next seven days.
A huge grin spread across her lips at the idea Damien proposed and she nodded her head, pushing her hair from her eyes. “So long as mine comes with extra cream and marshmallows on the top.” She said, reminding him of how she had taken her hot chocolate when she was six. It was one of their silly jokes that had followed them into adulthood, and occasionally Taylor would pull it out and dust it off. She grabbed the first of the bags and pulled it through to the bedroom, which she found after opening the door to a broom cupboard. It was just as stunning as the rest of the cabin, with the en-suite off to the side boasting a sizeable bath that Taylor already wanted to sink into. Taylor worked quickly and efficiently, as her medical training had taught her to do, and it wasn’t long before everything was hanging up, tucked into drawers, or resting where it belonged. She put the empty bags into the bottom of the wardrobe out of the way and then returned to Damien, where the fire was crackling away and the hot chocolate was waiting for her just the way she liked it. “Have I told you that I love you?” She asked him, cupping her drink and picking one of the mini-marshmallows from the top.
