you came to me like a dream and disappeared only after leaving scars tag: Natalie 409 words outfit music Nick had been pulling too many strings to keep track of lately, but was relatively pleased with the progress he was making in the eyes of the Board of Directors. His father, as usual, had a knack for disagreeing with his ideas but the young heir didn't really care what his father thought; at the end of the day, he had the support of the people that mattered and those that could ensure he became their next CEO and that his father was losing sight of what the company stood for. One such idea was the scholarship program that Nick devised to not only offer new jobs, but to expand the company's influence into major universities across the United States.
He planned to spearhead the program, happy that it had been approved much to his father's chagrin, by speaking at the local university to the business majors and explaining the scholarship as well as offering an internship to one student that stood out during the academic year. This would not only force competition academically but give him a gauge on the type of people that could potentially be working for him. Nick even planned to spice things up by taking three of the best and having them work for him for a period of two months leading up to graduation which would allow him to see how they worked in a corporate environment and how they handled specific tasks given by superiors.
It was exciting for the young billionaire as he walked across the campus, most students glancing his way then moving on their way. He checked his watch noting that he had some time before he was scheduled to speak and made his way into the student center and to a coffee stand of sorts. It was like Christmas had come early and the young man walked up to the counter after waiting for the other students to order and smiled politely to the curly young man taking orders. "I'd like a medium french vanilla cappuccino, please - light on the cream, if possible."
The student acknowledged the order and once he had paid, Nick stood to the side and watched a young dark-headed woman as she made his drink not being able to see her face like the other workers and he could tell she was apparently very swamped, shoving his hands into the pockets of his overcoat. He had to stick out like a sore thumb among the modestly dressed college kids, but he was used to stares and whispers at that point in his life. |

With Christmas coming, all Natalie wanted to do was curl up in her tiny apartment and hibernate till the holiday rush was over. She hated Christmas time, as it was just a reminder of how alone she was. Her birthday was also Christmas day, and honestly she couldn't care less about it. Yeah, she was turning 21, but she had no one to go out and celebrate with. She'd probably just pass the time watching Netflix while curled up on her couch with some tea. It was how she spent that day every year, and she saw no reason to break tradition. As much as she wanted to stay home today, two of her co-workers called out and she was called into work last minute, and being broke as all get out, she couldn't say no. With the semester coming to a close, it seemed every student had come to the coffee shop at some point during the day to combat the all-nighter they probably pulled studying for finals. Natalie had only been at work for an hour, but she felt like she had made over a hundred coffees. She was exhausted and just wanted to go home. Unfortunately she had another two hours to go at work and then class later that day. She sighed and continued to make coffee. At hour two and coffee number 200 (ok an exaggeration, but come on, didn't anyone own their own coffee maker?) Natalie was beginning to feel delirious. She had stayed up pretty late the night before working on an abnormal psychology paper, and wasn't expecting to be called into work today. When she laid eyes on a customer, she had to do a double take. He looked so familiar, but it couldn't be him. She hadn't laid eyes on him since he graduated from their boarding school. She looked back down at the coffee she was making and tried to concentrate. But she couldn't help herself from looking again. There was no way it could be him. She finished the coffee and put a lid and sleeve on it. She called out the order and when he went to take the coffee from her she couldn't help herself.. you came to me like a dream and disappeared only after leaving scars tag: Natalie 389 words outfit music The executive stood patiently, taking the opportunity to look around the area and noted how busy the area was making him smirk at his own memories of college. Even though he'd attended ivy league universities, he found that all students had the same basic needs when it came to coffee and a place to unwind. There wasn't very much that separated the social classes in that respect; Nick was heir to a prestigious corporation and yet even he had sat beside the humblest of people at times in his life. Pulling himself from his thoughts and nodding at a ground of female students that cast him waves and quickly followed through with girlish giggles, he shook his head and looked back to the counter.
Hearing his order be called, he stepped forward and took a hand out of his pocket in order to retrieve the cup, but when he looked up he felt as if he'd seen a ghost. At first, he thought that his eyes could have been playing tricks on him or it was simply someone that looked a lot like Natalie but all doubt was erased when she spoke his name. Anyone else would have called him 'Mr. Davenport' or 'Nicholas'. Nick was a title that only his closest friends, family, and those from school referred to him and he knew each of them by face and name as well.
Despite initially finding it impossible, his widened eyes relaxed and he smiled. "Natalie. I never thought I'd ever see you again after school. Then again, that's partly my fault. I didn't make keeping track of easy." Nick took a sip of the coffee, quite pleased at the taste and summed up that it was as good if not better than the gourmet cups he'd been paying two to three times more for a cup at his office. Lowering his cup, he took a more concerned and casual look on his face as opposed to the matter of fact one from before. "It sure has been a while, hasn't it? How are you?" Natalie looked very much the same as she had in school; she was older, of course, but just as beautiful if not more so and he couldn't help but feel a tad nervous around her though he did his best to cover it up. |

Natalie took a deep breath to calm the nerves that began to surface. The last person she expected to see at the coffee shop on campus was Nick. She hadn’t talked to him for years now. She bit her bottom lip as she handed him his coffee. “Yeah..I um..didn’t expect to see you either. I mean, I kind of fell off the grid myself…with everything..you know..” She stopped talking when she realized she was babbling. She hated talking others, especially of the male gender, but this was worse than ever. Probably because of their history, but she had to get it together. She was making a complete fool out of herself like she was when she was a lowly freshman at their high school. She nervously twirled a piece of hair around her finger as he asked her how she was. He seemed to be a little nervous, but he probably was just caught off guard by her. “Oh, you know, I’ve been um, busy. School and work…not a whole lot of time for anything else..” She smiled nervously. “How um, have you been?” She saw her boss staring at her, but she ignored him. The general rush had died down a bit, and honestly she was due for a break. Looking at Nick brought back a flood of memories. So much had happened that year they spent in school together. The rest of her time at the school she kept to herself and flew under the radar. She never let anyone else in like she had with Nick. He had probably long forgotten about her. With the years that had gone by, she was most likely someone he never thought twice about. She was surprised he even recognized her. She bit her lip again as she said, “So um, what brings you to campus? I’m sure it’s not the coffee..” Honestly she could kick herself for her poor conversational skills. It was a wonder she had passed her public speaking class. WORDS: 332 OUTFIT: HereNOTES: Hmmm… MADE BY DOORMUFFIN OF CAUTION. NO STEALING OR I'LL SEND DAVID BOWIE AFTER YOU

you came to me like a dream and disappeared only after leaving scars tag: Natalie 564 words outfit music Natalie's speech pattern gave her nervousness away to Nick making it clear as day how his presence made her feel. Though the young man had his own nervousness going on inside him at the reunion, he tried his best to cover it up. The act wasn't so much for his or Natalie's sake as much as it was basic principles his father had taught him about keeping his inner workings a secret. While this tactic was generally employed in the board room or over a negotiation for the company, Nick had found it useful in even the smallest of conversations. He had to keep everyone at arm's length if he planned to vote his father out without the elder Davenport taking notice. Despite what he believed and his own ambitions, Nick was all too familiar with his father's intelligence.
When she asked how things had been with him, he took another sip of the coffee trying to gather his thoughts into a more simple form. He could have gone into detail with her on everything after graduation, but covering so much time would have them both standing there for at least an hour and neither of them had the time for it. Rather than go on how he had moved into his family estate on Long Island and how he'd taken control over New York's interests, he simplified it knowing details could come at a later time if he chose to reveal them. "Things have been well. After college, my father put me up as Executive Vice President so I guess I fell right into what I never wanted to do, right? It has it's perks, though."
The young man couldn't help but chuckle upon being asked what had really brought him there rather than the coffee. "Well, not at first, but I'm thinking of changing it up. This is great." He nodded with a smile, still amazed at coming across Natalie like he had. The odds of him happening to chance upon her at the university on the day he was to give his speech out of all the people going there was slim to none. Maybe it was fate or God's way of being funny. Either way, he had to play the hand he was dealt and, luckily for him, it was a good one. "I'm actually going to be speaking with the senior business majors this afternoon. I'll be taking one intern next year and am giving them the opportunity to compete. My father always said competition was good. It has a way of pushing others to their limits and, quite frankly, those are the type of people I need."
"So... still into art," he asked out of mere curiosity. The last time he'd seen her she had been one of the art kids at the school but then he graduated and lost all contact with everyone that wasn't in the corporate world which was a vast majority of the students at the boarding school. While they were all talented and deserved to be there in their own rights, the Davenports practically controlled the place and Nick still recalled the size of his own dorm room that his father had arranged personally for his son. This was, of course, during a time when his father thought he could win his son to seeing his way of things; time had proven otherwise. |

Natalie nodded as he spoke about his life after college. It was clear even during their boarding school days that he would be a big shot in a company. She was kind of surprised he was working for his father. Last she remembered things with his father were a bit heated. But hey, maybe things had changed over the years. Stranger things have happened. “Wow, that’s amazing that you started out right near the top of the company. I always saw you doing something like that, even if it’s not what you want to be doing. Your dad must see something in you if he thought of starting you up that high.” She bit her lip hoping that mentioning his father wasn’t going to send him away. “Oh, um, yeah we do have decent coffee here. It probably doesn’t compare to some of the more expensive stores out there, but for a school café, it’s good.” She couldn’t believe they were talking about the coffee. She felt pretty lame that she couldn’t come up with much else to talk about other than coffee. She felt so painfully awkward. Nothing had really changed since their boarding school days. She listened to him explain why he was on campus. “Wow, that’s really cool. Lucky for that one student that gets chosen. That’s a huge um, leg up in the real world. Not many will get a chance like that.” She knew the real world was rough once you graduated from college. Not everyone was as lucky as Nick was to have a father to help out. Natalie herself was dreading graduation and finding a real job. If she didn’t get a scholarship to graduate school for psychology, she probably didn’t stand much of a chance, and the thought terrified her. She had no idea how she would afford to go to school and live in her hole in the wall apartment by working a low-level job doing something she probably hated. “Art? Oh, um, yeah I still do a lot of that in whatever free time I have. It’s not as much as I used to..but um, people are willing to pay a bit for my work. It helps supplement the income I make here. Those bills add up pretty quickly…” She blushed and looked down at her feet for a moment. Money and bills was definitely not something she should bring up in conversation with Nick. She couldn’t believe he remembered her passion for art. She really assumed he had forgotten about her once graduation happened. “So um, can I ask, why did you um, vanish once you graduated?” She bit her lip and looked away again.
