PERSONALITY: From a young age, Hale was hardly a girly girl. Tomboy through and through, she would rather get down and dirty with the guys than dress up in heels and lace dresses. But she’s also quite the chameleon and able to adapt to any situation she’s put in. It’s been years now since she’s shed her criminal past but she still keeps it to herself. She’s quite the mystery bottled up in a tall, almost too thin body. Hale likes to have fun, she likes the adventure of life. A sweet girl, Hale keeps her past as vague as she possibly can. She’s always on guard, always checking out where she is. Even though she’s given up her old life, her old ways, she still walks into a place knowing exactly where the guards are, exactly how many cameras and exits there were. She can’t help but case the places she goes to. Growing up the way she did, she had to stay in shape. Hale is quite the athletic girl but she hates the gym and would rather do her workouts in the park. When boredom set in, though it was rare, Hale turned to books. And when things went south with the family, she turned, for once in her life, to a proper school. An intelligent girl, Hale went out and got herself not one, but two PhDs, in two subjects that got her what she and her family wanted through life; architecture and art. She had always been good with art, always able to tell the fakes from the real ones so why wouldn’t she put her superpower to good use? Despite her background, Hale is an honest person now. She won’t talk much about her past up until she started university, but after that point, she’ll tell the truth. Now, she’s just a pretty French girl in a big city trying hard to make an honest living while staying hidden from her old life and waking up every morning hoping it doesn’t come back to haunt her. !

HISTORY: The first years of Coty Adelaide Cosette Hale’s life were spent on the run because she was born into a family of criminals; mostly petty thieves though there were a few others with broader skills. She was ten when she lost her mother in a freak accident. They were in Italy, working a job. It was late and she had wanted gelato. So, she’d gone down to the little shop on the corner, about two blocks from where they were staying in Venice when the accident occurred. Even now, no one, not even the authorities are completely sure what happened and no one saw. The official story was that something made from clay was dislodged from a window sill or a roof ledge and it fell a few stories to the ground; just as Morgan was passing by. After that Hale was moved back to the city of her birth, Paris, France, to stay with other family.
From then she ran all sorts of cons with her family until she was eighteen, travelling all over the world. The family members always found their way back to Paris. It wasn’t anything fairy tale that happened to turn Hale away from the life and her family. No boy caught her attention and made her want to change her ways nor did anyone close to her get caught. But it was close to home; it was life changing. A few months after Hale’s seventeenth birthday, she was in Russia working when she and her crew got the call. Some aunts and uncles were doing a job in Brazil when things went south. They had checked all the equipment before show time and everything was clear. But somewhere between then and the day of something happened. Since they’d done the checks, no one is sure what happened there either but an uncle lost his life; someone had sabotaged them. With the heist botched, the group fled for safety. Since the uncle could be identified, the rest of the family had to lay low until the heat passed. Most of the group did minor things, pick pockets, card scams and the like. And Hale followed suit for a while but she was bored with the little things, she wanted something more; and she was good at forgeries. She forged herself an excellent education, applied to some universities around Paris to waste away the time until she could get back to what she had always known. It had been a big heist, one of the biggest anyone in the family had ever tried, so the heat had stayed on them for a long time.
Hale stayed in Paris to study and found that she actually enjoyed it. It wasn’t every day she could put her select skill set to good use. Hale ended up graduating with honours. At the time, she thought that was it but she was having too much fun that she continued on with an art programme with a vague enough background that it covered a wide variety of subjects; which Hale liked. And while there an old professor talked to her about getting her PhD because she’d done so well in his classes, she would be easily able to get but the wasn’t big enough to have the right programme. But he had also done some research on her behalf and found a school that had the proper programmes and would allow her to continue on with the art programme she was enrolled in while obtaining her PhD in Architecture. The family slowly started doing biggest cons, bigger heists but she stayed as clear of it as she could. She loved her family but her heart wasn’t as invested in the job as it should have been, as it used to be and the family saw that; they knew. And as much as she loved Paris, Coty was getting bored with the scenery. She tried London, moving in with her cousin when she was twenty-six and finished all her schooling. She didn’t last more than two months before she was off again. Next she tried Greece but that didn’t pan out either. She tried a few other places after that, hoping the bustling city streets would make her feel comfortable, like she couldn’t be followed, and if she was, she could lose them easily enough. Even though the old life wasn’t hers any more, she still felt like she was living it; always checking cameras, entrances and exits, guards. She didn’t know if it would ever stop. She was twenty-eight when she found herself in New York and realised it was these city streets, these people that she was looking for.
A whole new set of problems cropped up for her though. Since she’d been a thief her entire life, she didn’t have a background she could talk about. She would have to invent an entire lifetime as she went along. There were no stories she could tell that didn’t include a con or heist of some kind. Even the stories from when she was a small child, she couldn’t tell fully or properly because she had been the decoy; the distraction in the plan. In the end, she found it fairly easy to create stories or trips to the parks and museums of Paris while leaving out the shady details. With both PhDs under her belt, Coty Hale easily found work first at an art gallery, examining the works and authenticating them and eventually at the university, just finishing up the interviews and checks recently. Having as stable a life as she could hope for, Coty adopted two small teacup Yorkshire terriers to keep her company and tries to stay out of trouble though sometimes she tries; just to see if she’s still got the skills.
