GWENDOLYN HOPE WATSON-WARD
FULL NAME: Gwendolyn Hope Watson-Ward.
NICKNAMES: Gwen.
AGE: nineteen.
SEXUALITY: straight.
STATUS: single
GROUP: student
GRADE: freshman.
MAJOR: Animation
JOB OCCUPATION: Broadway box office.
HAIR: Naturally it’s a dark blonde/light brown shade, but like most she plays with dyes. It’s on the longer side and usually worn down and a little bit messy. She tends to play with it a lot so any style it starts the day in rarely lasts.
EYES: brown.
SCARS/BIRTHMARKS: From the accident, Gwen has scars all over her. Most of them have faded enough that she’s really the only one to notice them, but there are others which still look painful. There is a puncture scar on her left hand, a few harsh marks on her back and the rest may be small, but once spotted it’s easy to see the rest. Gwen is used to them now, but through experience she’s learnt that some people are uneasy with them, especially since she doesn’t talk about how she got them.
TATTOOS: None
PIERCINGS: Her ears just the once, but she often forgets to put earrings in and then has the painful experience of re-opening them when she does.
PLAY-BY: Hannah Murray!
LIKES: card games, Disney movies, wind chimes, dragonflies, cartoons in general, music through headphones, beanbag seats, dresses, boots, baggy cardigans, thrift stores, walking on empty beaches, crossword puzzles, cross-stitch, really hot baths, giraffes, carnivals, fireworks, Rubik’s Cube, toffee popcorn, fantasy stories, grapefruit juice, old diners.
DISLIKES: doctors, travelling by any other way than walking, sparkling water, thunderstorms, not wearing her locket, feeling exhausted, rats, funerals/cemeteries, when her uncle isn’t around, loneliness, salty fries, warm beer, winter, forgetting things, lime in drinks, fish, celebrity gossip, her asthma, being bored with other people around.
FEARS: any form of vehicle, rats, losing her uncle.
SECRETS: She keeps the accident a secret whenever she can, but Google searches don’t. She doesn’t talk about her childhood or enjoy anything relating to it. It’s almost as if Gwen tries or has forgotten about her younger years. She shut herself off from her past as best as she can, even if it’s not healthy.
PERSONALITY: Gwendolyn is the kind of girl who lingers of the edge of society. She’s polite and kind-hearted but rather a loner. She prefers her own company or that of a few friends to a large party or being part of a lively crowd. She’s quiet and rather thoughtful, but when she does speak it’s usually with something rather deep. She’s shy around strangers and often uncomfortable if the spotlight is on her for even the shortest of moments. Gwen is quite emotional and little things can sometimes trigger memories and feelings with her. However, despite how her tragic past has influenced her life, Gwen is still optimistic, but she just isn’t quite so enthusiastic and perky as the stereotype of such may suggest. She hates confrontation and even if people around her are fighting then she’ll get up and leave, regardless of her role or what she’s doing at the time. She’s never liked it, ever since she was a child and when it’s someone against her then she’s likely to remain silent and get out of there as fast as she can, when she can. For those who don’t know her and because of the way that she does keep to herself, Gwen can seem rather quirky. She admits to having some interesting hobbies that most her age don’t seem to have any desire to pursue, but they are her lifelines when times are rough. Completely new to the idea of love and romance, Gwen could possibly be called a hopeless romantic, but at the same time is probably sort of likely to be bumbling through any sort of childish crush or relationship that may come her way. It’s new territory for her and one she dreams of, but isn’t quite entirely comfortable with!
MOTHER: Rosaline Laura Watson (nee Ward), deceased.
FATHER: Gregory James Watson, deceased.
SIBLINGS: Leonard Joshua Watson, deceased.
OTHERS: Henry Kyle Ward, maternal uncle.
PETS: King Charles Cavalier called Lady
HOMETOWN: Lima, Peru
HISTORY: Gwendolyn was the second child born to English parents Gregory and Rosaline. They lived in Peru as part of a group from the British Museum. Rosaline specialised in verifying and dating artefacts found on sites and Gregory was part of the negotiation team when it came to obtaining new items for the museum catalogue. They had met in London, married in the capital city itself and then embarked on this adventure. Children had originally been something they intended on waiting for, but Leonard caught them by surprise and when he turned three they decided that he ought to have a playmate to help keep him out of trouble. However, Rosaline’s second pregnancy was not as smooth as the first and Gwendolyn came along much earlier than she was supposed to. With medical care for the first six weeks, the little girl fought on despite being much smaller for her age and being diagnosed with asthma when she was still very, very young.
The family lived in a villa overlooking the sea, which was where Gwen and Leon spent most of their days under the care of a nanny if their parents were working. They were a happy family and sometimes the kids accompanied their parents on trips to sites to look at some of the discoveries out there. They returned to England for holidays and Christmas to spend time with their families there. Everything was as perfect as Greg and Ros had hoped it would be and none of them had any complaints about their lives.
Gwen had been a happy-go-lucky girl with smiles and hugs for everyone. She was a picture of childhood bliss and nothing could keep her down for long; not even her brother’s taunts when he was in one of his moods with her over something she had done – usually it was if she beat him at a game. Energetic, full of smiles and a delight to be around, there wasn’t a thing to upset Gwen. Her parents were mighty overprotective of her most of the time, forever scared that she might develop more health problems. It had been alright, but Gwen broke her arm when she was four and then again at six which never made their worry any less. Both times she had fallen down stairs outside their home! So, they did wrap her in cotton wool and try to protect her from the world. They did the same with Leon, but he was much healthier than his sister and didn’t have to worry about becoming short of breath or getting sick.
Gwen was nine when the accident happened. The family were making a weekend out of Rosaline’s work at one of the sites when the bus they were travelling on plunged into a ravine. Gwen had been asleep when it happened, curled up against Greg, but the little girl was eventually one of the only survivors of the fatal crash. Her family were dead by the time rescue teams reached them, but the accident had knocked Gwen further back down the bus and she was hidden from immediate sight, in pain and terrified of everything. She was found twenty-two hours after the crash in a pretty rough condition and barely conscious. With her family dead, it was her uncle who was contacted and who flew out to take care of her while she was in the hospital. Gwen needed surgery to repair some internal damage and she was cut up and injured pretty bad elsewhere, but the doctors deemed it a miracle that she came out of the accident so lightly compared to others. In the end only four managed to survive the whole ordeal, with more not making it out of the hospital.
Uncle Henry had custody of Gwen when she was well enough to leave, but the happy-go-lucky girl had gone. Now, she was a shell, barely showing emotion and only talking to Henry in whispers. She became withdrawn, shy around strangers and less like her old self. Henry had no wife or kids of his own, and felt completely out of his depth at times. He paid for a therapist to try to get through to her, but it was only the start of a very long healing process. He worked in New York City for an international financial company and moved Gwen there once she was feeling better physically. Staying in Peru did not seem to be helping her heal, especially when she became aware that bus crashes like the one she survived were not quite the fluke she initially thought. Her fear of that was paralysing her, so Henry wanted to distance her from it completely.
He hoped that a new city and a new school might help the young girl, but Gwen only retreated further into her shell. Strangers left her feeling uncomfortable and people asking questions sent her into a panic, even if they were innocent. Henry had no idea what to do, but the therapist just said that it would take time for Gwendolyn to break out of the adjustment period. Gwen was turning eleven when the doctor told her uncle that in most medical terms she was better. She wasn’t the happy-go-lucky girl she had once been, but apparently anything left now would change with time or would be a part of her for possibly the rest of her life. Henry sought out other opinions and treatments, but Gwen still remained quite the same. She would only speak to the people she was close to, school was a daunting place for her to be and in the middle of the night he would hear her moving downstairs or hear the familiar tunes of some Disney movie coming from her room. Gwen didn’t sleep very well since the accident and it seemed that her nights would eventually turn into movies and drawing things.
It was Disney that Gwen thought responsible most of the time for picking her out of melancholy moods. There were happy stories, bright characters and some of the movies even had the hint of sadness in them when it came to family. In a way they restored her hope when she thought she had nothing. She knew Henry did his best, but there were times when she saw how clueless he was and how he didn’t even know where to begin when it came to helping her. She had things that were just too hard to talk about even with him and he was still getting used to having a child in his life that wasn’t going home at the end of the weekend. She would draw characters in her books and sketch them in school when she felt nervous.
School was a tough place for Gwen. She was always lingering on the edge and people noticed that. Throughout that period in her life she had two friends and they were all she needed. She didn’t go to the game or attend parties or dances. Henry had to practically bribe her to go to her high school prom when it came around! She also had to consider her future and while locked away on those nights when sleep never came for her, Gwen began looking at a future in animation. Things had changed drastically since some of her favourite Disney movies had been made, but animation was still bringing smiles to people’s faces and it seemed to be something that very few grew out of. She wanted to be a part of it. Henry encouraged her dream, but also wanted Gwen to take some time to think about it. He still worried about the little girl who had vanished in the crash that claimed her family. The last thing he wanted was to let Gwen go out there and watch as anything bad happened to her.
So, she deferred her place at NYU for a year. She got a job and continued to think about her future, gradually pushing herself a little further out of her comfort zone. Gwen was never going to be the bright, sparky little girl again, but Henry wanted to ensure that she was done hiding behind walls before adulthood ensnared her. Gwen preferred her own company to that of big groups, but she was able to deal with them a little better now, rather than feeling the pull of claustrophobia making her want to run from crowds. It was also during this year that she made the decision to add Ward to the end of her name, as a thank you gesture to her uncle for everything he had done for her, even though he had the choice not to. Soon enough the summer was by again and this time she told Henry that she felt as ready as she ever would for college. At his request she agreed to spend at least her freshman year living at the house, just in case she needed the retreat. Henry still worried that if anything happened to her it would be his fault somehow. Gwen still found it tough to talk about the accident, she still had nightmares and the young girl never got into any type of vehicle as much as she could help it since she had moved to New York with her uncle. They were things that never changed and probably never would, but Gwen was aware that she had been given her life to live it, not to hide in fear or mourning like some modern day cross between Annie and Miss Havisham.
