PERSONALITY: Gabe, or Tricks, is a scholar. He lives for academia and one day will be a professor, but not until he has a couple of good years of research papers and journal articles behind him, along with a couple of letters after his mouthful of a name. He’s surprisingly clumsy and can sometimes come across as awkward because of it. He lacks confidence when it comes to romance out of his fear of rejection, but he’s a polite and social guy most of the time. He’s shy when it comes to talking about his feelings, but he does try; it just usually makes no sense and ends with him chuckling to himself. He’s always been the side-kick and always played second best since he was a kid, so now he often sacrifices his own desires for those who he cares about more; it was always his friends who got the girl he liked. He’s a sweetheart who will go miles out of his way to make someone happy, especially a girl he likes. Unfortunately, he’s vulnerable to love and often falls too fast for girls who don’t see him as anything more than a bit of a dorky friend. He’s a pacifist who wouldn’t and probably couldn’t raise a fist to anyone in his whole life, and the only arguments he has are educational debates over theories and opinions. He has an unusual love for magic tricks after his grandfather taught him enough to start a small entertaining business and to this day will use them to try and impress people, or cheer them up. He’s quiet and much prefers a night in to a wild party, but he does have his fun and socialises enough to keep his friends in order and his lifestyle a balanced one. He has a way of knowing when to leave someone alone and when to try and console them, in many senses he’s rather empathic. Whilst he is all about a thirst for knowledge, he believes in following his heart too, though it has been and will probably be broken again. He can seem sorrowful at times when he‘s given something up for a friend, or stopped dating a girl because someone else likes her, but it‘s his way of processing and dealing with things, more than really being in a state of depression. He interests may be a little outdated but he‘s never had a problem with it before and often loses touch with the modern world of pop culture, because he‘s so in love with the romantic beauty of the past. He‘s a deep-thinker and often gets lost in his own thoughts and strikes up the deepest of conversations, which can sometimes totally unnerve people who aren‘t quite so used to him. He‘s a bit of a bookworm but with more of a love for historical novels and Greek tragedies than anything else. He harbours a bit of a geeky and somewhat childish side to him too with his love for the original X-Men, Power Rangers and Star Wars, but, hey, we‘re all allowed our little things, right? Gabe just happens to be a slight goof-ball around those he feels entirely comfortable around, which is few, sadly.

HISTORY: Gabe was the last son born into the Fitzpatrick family, the Irish family who had moved to Nebraska two generations before. They had a small family home with an excess of land that his parents and grandparents used as an animal shelter. His father was a vet and worked from an office on the back of their land. Gabe grew up with all kinds of creatures who would come and go and range from big and small. He loved his home and the animals he tended to with his brothers as he grew up.
Gabe also had a really close relationship with his grandfather, Edward. The old man had a talent for slight of hand tricks and magic which he taught his youngest grandson from an early age. In fact, it was his inherited skill of magic, combined with his last name that led to his nickname of “Tricks“ being given to him when he was just seven years of age. It was a nickname and a talent that remained with him throughout his life, not that Gabe really minded.
As he grew older, Gabe fell in love with the world of academia after studying his mother and the classical works that she taught in a college not far from the city in which they lived. He also followed in his brother’s footsteps and found a swimming pool to be his haven for many, many years of his young life. In fact, he was drawn to water most of time, whether he read by it, swam in it or just liked to look at it.
At school, he was the guy everyone liked, to an extent. He wasn’t popular, not by far, but he didn’t get bullied too much either. The girls liked the fact that he never seemed to leer at them or make suggestive remarks or listen to the idles rumours that filled the hallways of the school on a regular basis. He was that guy who could always be their best friend, their shoulder to cry on, but whose feelings always went unrequited. It wasn’t easy to always be that guy, but Gabe was simply too much of a sweetheart to push them away and his heart was unintentionally stomped on many a time with high school crushes and first time loves. He was a hard worker and a closet nerd who, growing up, collected anything related to X-Men or Power Rangers. A small group of really close friends and a couple of teenage evenings spent at the local café was how he got through high school, as well as reading most the journals his mother brought home or was teaching. In fact, he developed a very close relationship with his mom, whereas his brothers identified more with their dad.
When Gabe was eighteen, there was an accident. Gabe and his mother were driving back from a lecture at the college where she taught when a truck crashed into the driver’s side of the car. Gabe was lucky and escaped with a busted knee that would heal soon enough and a handful of cuts and bruises on his ribs, hands and face. His mother wasn’t so lucky. She lived, but was paralysed from the waist down. Gabe always remembers being so in awe of how she took the news. She didn’t let it get her down and refused to let it bring Gabe down either. She expected better and he would give her better by chasing his dreams and making her proud. The house was re-designed with wheelchair access and after she got used to everything she was back teaching again, refusing to let the loss of her legs get her down. Ever since then, Gabe has had the utmost respect for fighters who deal with everything life throws at them, but he can get irked by people who constantly complain about trivial matters when people who had life changing accidents rarely moan about the dish fate handed to them.
When high school ended, Gabe moved to California to attend UCLA. The biggest thing he missed was the discussions with his mom, but he majored in what they both loved most; classical studies with a minor in anthropology. He somehow wound up in the mad life of a fraternity too; Pi Kappa Phi, where he came out of his shell a little more. Most of his personality from high school remained and he was still the guy who the girls saw more as a friend than a boyfriend, but he went on a few dates, though nothing really serious came out of it, despite his heart wanting otherwise. Whilst at UCLA, Gabe also took up surfing and him and his friends would often go to the beach on the weekends and challenge each other with a board. He used to get ribbed for his old fashioned hobbies and likes most of the time, but drunken magic tricks were his speciality and whilst at college, it was rare anyone called him by his actual name, since Tricks seemed to simply take over without anyone really trying.
Once he graduated, he moved onto studying for his Masters at UCLA, quickly graduating from there before moving back home. He loved the sunny life, but he wanted to do something else now and after a few months at home helping his parents with their jobs, he got a call from one of his fraternity buddies and within another month he had packed up and was on his way to New York. He moved in with his old pal and got a job as the museum as a tour guide, liking the flexible hours for when he would be back at the university in the fall semester, enrolled on a doctoral programme into the ancient world.
He loves New York and on the nights when his friend does manage to drag him from their apartment, it‘s quite a riot, although Gabe still plays the wingman, the side-kick as always. He‘s only part way through his first year towards his next shiny degree, but he‘s always looking for the next challenge to go with it. Always with a trick up his sleeve and a heart of gold to do the right thing, Gabe works through the days in NYC, his spare time spent in the museum where he works, passing his knowledge onto those with similar interests to his own. He’s grown tired of being the side kick and wants a chance to be the leading man like Marlon Brando, but he will always do what he feels is in the best interest of those he cares about and until he learns to stop sacrificing his own happiness for everyone else, it’s a role he’ll always be stuck in.
