ROWENA ANNALIE DOE
FULL NAME: Rowena Annalie Doe.
NICKNAMES: Ro
AGE: 34
GENDER: Female
SEXUALITY: Bisexual.
STATUS: Single - divorced.
GROUP: Citizen.
GRADE: N/A.
MAJOR: N/A.
JOB OCCUPATION: Caterer.HAIR: Blonde and wild. It’s long and takes far too much time to wrangle into something neat and tidy. It’s easier to let the waves and curls do as they please most days and just hope she doesn’t look too crazy by the end of it.
EYES: Brown.
SCARS/BIRTHMARKS: One on her chest from open heart surgery, and another on her ankle from a climbing accident when she was a kid.
TATTOOS: None.
PIERCINGS: Just her ears once.
PLAY-BY: Natasha Lyonne!LIKES: Asian food, cooking, tequila shots, fresh lemonade, copper pans, chunky peanut butter, biographies, dogs, farmer’s markets, black clothes, late night movies, red wine (if she must have wine), zombie cocktails, gummy bears, chicken, strong coffee, cold mornings, comfy shoes, a full diary, foreign shows while she cooks, evening language classes, Japanese plushies, ivy.
DISLIKES: Dining out, feeling exhausted, stiletto heels, champagne, plain salads (be inventive!), flying long haul, dating sites, being addicted to bacon bites, politics, baby gushing, nicotine patches (she prefers the gum), vodka, ready meals, landing innocent people who she cares about in trouble, icing, taming her hair, being awake before 6am.
FEARS: Dentists, window seats on flights, heights.
SECRETS: She carries dental floss in her bag along with a travel toothbrush so she can always take care of her teeth. Her fear of the dentist comes from when poor dental work left her with a near deadly bacterial heart infection, so now she’s super anal about her oral hygiene. She’d rather not have to see a dentist at all, even just for a check up.
PERSONALITY: Rowena has a big mouth and isn’t afraid to speak her mind. She’s opinionated, honest and more often than not she’s crude and sarcastic in the way she’ll tell it. Rowena is a cynical type, but she likes to be proven wrong. She knows the world isn’t a terrible place, but thinks that happiness is maybe reserved for better people; like her friends. She’s a kind person if someone can befriend her. Helpful and good hearted, Rowena is the type to go the extra mile for someone in need. The proof is there that’s she’s hard working, but sometimes Ro can do too much or take on too many things. She may like the distractions that come with being busy, but overworking herself is never good either. It doesn’t take much to annoy her, but since she’s a rather vocal character, she usually lets people know straight away. She’s got a knack for smoothing things over in situations so long as she wasn’t initially involved, but it’s also clear that Ro will stand up for herself with ease. She’s stubborn on many things and could never be used as a doormat by anyone. She’s definitely the ‘act first, think later’ type. Love has not been lucky for her, but it’s also not been a top priority since the divorce. Most of the time she’s unimpressed with cheap lines and promises of quick thrills. Ro wants something that will surprise her, something different from what everyone else expects. She’s seen all the games, and isn’t going to be swayed by them. She’s quick to reject people who come to her, after her life has shown her too many glimpses of bad romances and poor choices of the heart.MOTHER: Jessica Tracey Doe, 58.

HISTORY: Trevor was a womaniser. He met Jessica when he was engaged to his third wife (out of five so far) but he never mentioned the previous marriages, kids or future plans to Jessica. He just charmed her, swept her away in stories of what could be, and then ditched her when she was several months pregnant. It was a pattern he had done for many years already. Trevor came from money; a fortune inherited from imports dating back too far for him to care. In other words, he paid for his kids, but thought that was enough to cover his reckless behaviour. Jessica was obviously furious with him, but financial support meant that she could get a small two bedroom home to raise the baby girl in. Rowena was a troublesome baby. She could never settle, and there was always something wrong with her. Jessica did everything right, but Rowena was a trying child. She stayed that way through most of her childhood. She was the kid who lost one glove, got the headlice from the other kid in her class, had a cold longer than anyone else, managed to ruin Jessica’s dates by being sick like something out of the exorcist. Rowena did nothing on purpose, but it was like Lady Luck turned her back on their little broken family.
Rowena took after her mother, who was left jaded after the actions of Trevor Merriman. She went to school swearing and calling the other kids names that should only be heard after the watershed. Jessica tried to tell her differently, but at the same time she didn’t want her daughter believing in Disney Princesses and empty promises. She wanted Rowena to know the truth about the broken, fucked up world. Trevor only took Rowena every once in a while, when he felt like playing the good father. He liked to do it to boost his own ego, but often he forgot the names of his own children, and stared at them like they were aliens from another planet. Rowena eventually came to expect nothing from her father, but Jessica encouraged her to indulge him until she was sixteen, purely because she felt that Rowena deserved to know the man who helped make her; even if he was a pompous ass.
Jessica worked a lot of late evenings when Rowena got older. She moved through jobs over the years, but when Rowena was in her early teens, Jessica worked evenings at the hospital. It was then that Rowena began to cook and look after herself more. She really enjoyed cooking, and took it up because the ready meals Jessica bought tasted like cardboard. As Rowena got older she experimented more with her cooking, but by the time high school was ending she knew this was the future for her. She made it into culinary school for college, and didn’t give a damn about leaving Lafayette to travel to New York for it. Her father had found his fifth bride by then and her mom was settling down with some guy from the offices where she had been working, so Rowena felt like it was her time to leave the nest – and maybe never return? She wasn’t exactly the family loving type.
It was in New York that she met Reggie. Rowena was working evenings in a bar when he came in with some friends. She was used to sleazy guys and pick up lines, but he persisted and actually wanted to get to know her – so she let him. By the time she graduated culinary school, they were living together. Rowena then worked in upscale restaurants getting the experience she needed and proving herself. It was only after storming out after the head chef bullied a new starter to the point of tears that she decided to start up her own place. She put everything she could into it, bank loans weighing her down too, but she eventually opened RoAnDo. It was her baby, and on the night of it’s opening (which was a disaster on all counts) Reggie proposed.
They eloped for the wedding, mostly because Rowena couldn’t deal with her family getting involved. Back in New York she dived into getting RoAnDo off the ground. It eventually flourished. She specialised in world foods, so no one who came through her doors would get a hamburger and fries. She went to learn more for herself and spent long nights in the kitchen with a team she loved like family. For four years they made it one of the best “unknown” spots in the city. Then her world crashed down around her.
She came home from closing up to find Reggie had packed all his things. He was trying to leave before she got home, but had epically failed. He told her that she only cared about the restaurant. In truth, Rowena was the main breadwinner in their relationship. On top of supporting them, she was paying off the bank loans that had got RoAnDo up and running in the first place. Reggie was just too selfish to see that everything she did was also for them. He had wanted dinner on the table when he came home, not 1am leftovers. There was a huge fight, and the police eventually found their way to the apartment thanks to a neighbour.
The divorce was messy. Reggie was demanding all kinds. He seemed to think that the restaurants success meant that Rowena had a pot of gold hidden away somewhere. He couldn’t accept that it was all going to pay off loans and bills. Yeah, she could survive comfortably, but only just. She wasn’t rich by any means. She wasn’t able to go out and replace her finicky car that she’d been driving around since college. Still, he got the apartment in the deal, and Rowena was happy to be rid of him and left with her restaurant.
At the encouragement of her friends she went on an extended vacation. She figured she could go and find some new recipes, broaden the menu and use the time to refresh the restaurant. However, a bad toothache was hampering her journey. Eventually, she had to cave and a hotel recommended an American dentist while she was in Dubai. He was reasonably priced and he tapped annoying on the source of her pain; a cracked molar, probably from too many nuts and seeds. Anyway, he fixed it all up for her and she went on her way, finishing up her travels and returning home.
Where she got incredibly sick.
She collapsed in the kitchens one night, and the next thing she knew she was waking up in hospital and her mother was there. Rowena couldn’t remember the last time Jessica had been at her side in person. Their relationship was phone calls every few months and cards with odd gifts a few times a year. It turned out that Rowena had nearly died. There had been a bacterial infection in her heart, which after talking to the doctors they assumed came from the dental work in Dubai. They said improper equipment and treatment could have caused the near death experience which had only been corrected with open heart surgery. Rowena was furious.
Her recovery time harmed RoAnDo in a terrible way. Her staff were competent, but they weren’t ‘run an entire restaurant for six months’ competent. She had to close the place down, and then focused on getting something out of the fucked up situation she was in. The compensation she eventually got over the Dubai mess left her with something, but she didn’t know what else to do until she was at a wedding for a friend. The catering was terrible and she made an off hand comment about how she could do better than this, and someone else there suggested that she should.
So she did.
Rowena launched the business with a friend, using the last of her compensation to get the space they needed and the equipment. The staff came later after the two of them struggled through a funeral, and a very confusing kid’s party alone. Her friend stepped up to do a lot of the social stuff since Rowena had no filter and said far too many things without thinking them through; it was fine when she was in a kitchen working, but not when she was also in the forefront of the business. Through hard work and some of their contacts, they got themselves off the ground running, and soon had contracts for companies and other events. They still offered personal events too, but it was good to know that there was always going to be work for them during the quieter times.
Rowena still misses her days of having her own restaurant, but catering has given her more freedom. She’s not got a whole lot going for her beyond the business, but that’s fine by her. On the nights when she can’t sleep she has a kitchen to keep her company, and a strong stomach for liquor.
