Working undercover could be exhausting. Atlas sometimes spent months at a time pretending to be something he wasn’t. He thrived on the adrenaline rush when a sting operation was underway, but when it finally wrapped up and he was plain old Atlas again, he was weary. He didn’t notice how hard it wore on him when he was keeping up the act, but when it was done he felt it alright. He’d finished his reports only that afternoon, turning in paperwork detailing three months’ worth of information and evidence. It wasn’t exactly possible to slip by the precinct when he was pretending to be anything other than a cop. If it was important intel, then he could get ‘arrested’ and dragged down for questioning, or there were a few others who could visit undercover to take evidence from him at a secure location. Atlas still hated how long the wrap up could be though. The longer he was under, the more paperwork he had to go through.
At least now he usually had a while of dealing with riff raff, informants and the typical cleaning up of the city. They tended to give him a break for a few weeks or months before throwing him back into another vice op. Still, Atlas would never admit to needing the time simply to unwind. Some of his undercover tasks got dark, and it wasn’t like he could interfere, flash his badge and gun and make it all stop. They needed evidence, needed people and names. Plus, if Atlas revealed his true identity in a room full of criminals he doubted very much that he would be walking out of there alive. He very much wanted to live to see his hair turn grey, if he had any say in the matter.
He was a long way from grey hair and fine lines (or at least he hoped he was!), so Atlas planned to spend this particular Friday at the Marquee. Honestly, he thought he would have tired of nightclubs and bars with the amount of them he frequently for the sake of his job, but he had only grown fonder of the music and the noise. He lingered at the bar, glass in hand, watching as people danced, flirted and fell over each other. The music vibrated through him as he brought his glass back up to his lips, the glass clinking against his teeth as someone stumbled into him from behind. Nightclubs had an odd way of reminding him of the dodgem cars at a fairground. Reaching up to his mouth with his fingers, and then running his tongue over the entirety of his mouth, Atlas was relieved to find that there was no metallic taste of blood, and no chip in his fine white teeth. Also, none of his drink had ended up on his shirt by some miracle, which was another bonus! If only he was always so lucky in club collisions. Maybe then his laundry basket wouldn’t have that awkward underlying stench of vodka, no matter how many times he cleaned or sprayed it with everything he kept under his kitchen sink.

Kita didn't get to be in the city as much as she wanted to, despite calling it home. Or, at least, her second home. Seattle would always be home, would always be where she kept her favourite toys but the boathouse she lived in when she was in New York was incredible. Just outside of New York, barely a trip into the city and it was so peaceful. She only ever found it bothersome when the friends she did have in New York wanted to have a girl's night out. She wasn’t near a train station and she refused to bus it so it meant that she had to drive the short distance into the city and that obviously meant that she was not driving home again. Every girl's night meant an overnight visit and a hotel room. Kita had never been overly fond of hotel rooms, they weirded her out a bit if she were being honest; which was probably why she didn't mind all that much spending the extra cash and staying at a ridiculously expensive hotel, because they were people accustomed to the quirks of the rich and whimsical. At least she stayed at the same hotel every visit so they were used to her quirks and had things ready the way she preferred when she got there. It made sleeping in the city a little more bearable.
She was not a city girl despite growing up in Seattle. The family house was on the lake, right there with dock they could jump off or tie a little dingy boat to. When she was older, it was bigger boats, a surprise boat house built for her and so many other adjustments that it made doing her work from home that much easier. She was one of the best and at such a young age. If she wanted to, already she could retire and live the rest of her life traveling the world in her favourite boat. But she loved the build, she loved the design and the personalization of a finished product. She also loved those rich and famous people because they were her advertisements. The friends she was meeting with tonight were not those glitz and glamour people though, they were friends from Seattle, before she'd become some pseudo celebrity in her own right. They were the ones that knew Kita from school, saw her pick fights with the bullies because they did something she didn't like. They were the true friends, the ones that knew Kita better than she knew herself; the ones she called family.
After checking into her hotel, Kita send the text message to say she was in town and hopping in the shower to get ready. From there within an hour, she was dressed, had her make up done to perfection and was just making sure she'd slipped her hotel keycard in her purse before heading out. She grabbed a cab, giving directions to the Marquee and messaged her friends to see where they were. There were things about Kita's life that she liked quite a bit. The weird fame she got in both her sport's world and the celebrity world wasn't it but the fact that she could bypass the line was. She might not party in the city nightly, but she knew a lot of people; a lot of doormen and bouncers at clubs. She stepped out of the cab, telling him to keep the change before waving her friends over and heading straight for the door. The bouncer waved them through without a second though, smiling and saying a quick hello to Kita as she passed by him. "I'll grab the first round." She said over the music before heading over to the bar. She was almost there when some idiot pushed into her, throwing her into the back of someone else. She righted herself, glaring at the idiot who did nothing more by smile sheepishly at her before disappearing into the crowd. "Not even an apology. What an asshole." She said with a shake of her head before turning around to do just that to the person she'd stumbled into. She put her hand on his shoulder, moving to the same side with a worried expression on her face. "I'm sorry about that. Some asshole knocked into me. Bruised, broken?" She asked, with a grin.

Atlas saw New York as a city of secrets. His job revealed so many of them, whether he wanted to know them or not. There was little he could do about it. He knew what he was walking into, and he couldn’t turn away just because a door to darkness was open and someone was beckoning him through it. He had to step through, if only to make sure it could be locked someday. It might save other people from seeing the horrors there. It was what he had wanted his whole life. The only question Atlas sometimes asked himself, often when he was alone in bed replaying some hideous scene from a terrible sting was; “How long could he last for?” There had to be a limit to how much he could take. One day he had to break from what he saw and knew. There would be a breaking point, and then he would beg to move somewhere quieter where the days were just paperwork and procedure. Or, maybe, he might even hand in his notice, give back his gun and his badge and turn his back on the NYPD entirely. It wasn’t something Atlas actively hoped for or considered, but the blackness of night paved the way for the darkest of thoughts, those that he tried to ignore as best he could the rest of the time.
He was a laid back guy who had a decent handle on his life, but Atlas was young. Right now his life considered of very little. He only had himself to worry about. There wasn’t anyone else to think of when he accepted covers that lasted months, or threw himself into positions that posed a threat to his safety. Yes, he had parents and a brother, but they knew what Atlas was choosing to risk. They accepted that he was willing to give his life in the line of duty if it came down to it. They weren’t going to be happy if he died, but no one ever was glad at the death of a loved one. Atlas hoped it never happened, but he wasn’t stupid enough to make promises. He had already found himself in enough tight spots during his career that he had wondered if he was going to make it out alive, or at least in one whole piece.
Atlas put his glass down on the bar top before it was able to be knocked from his hands again. The first time he had been lucky enough to only spill a small amount over his hand. If it happened again he’d probably find himself wearing the whole glass or with an actual injury. Unfortunately, drunken staggering in a crowded nightclub led to accidents, and it wasn’t the kind where he could flash his badge and have them hauled off to a cell for the night. They had to do quite a bit more than lose their coordination on the dance floor to earn a VIP spot in the drunk tank. Besides, Atlas had probably been there himself when he was younger and still testing his limits when it came to drinking. These days he had to behave a little better given that he was an officer of the law. Turning slightly to see the blonde woman beside him, he smiled. “No need to exchange insurance details this time.” He joked, wrapping his fingers back around his glass and relaxing again. The accident was over, no one was hurt, and everyone still had their dignity in tact. It was the best they could hope for.

Kita loved going into the city to meet up with her friends and have a good time. She enjoyed hitting up Broadway and catching a show but she loved her home on the water's edge. It was just out of the city enough that it was quiet and she could work on whatever new boat she was building to her heart's content. She had a long list of people waiting for the call that told them theirs was ready. It was just her and a couple of assistance who had proven themselves. She was an award-winning sailor and she prided herself on the skill and quality of the work she put out into the world. Not just anyone could afford the boats she built but those who could really appreciate the workmanship and skill that went into each and every inch of their newest prized possession. Kita could have easily created a huge factory and turned out carbon copies of a design she'd created but she also felt like just about anyone with money and the ability to draw could do that. Every single boat that left her humble workshop was one of a kind and would never be replicated. She kept the schematics for them all, just in case repairs needed to be done but otherwise, they stayed in the filing cabinet to be forgotten.
Her clients liked the fact that they got to sit down with her and tell her everything they required from the sailing vessel they were paying for. She made everything from those small little sailing boats in cheesy romantic comedies to huge sailing yachts that were photographed and called outrageous. While her start came about in the smaller vessels, she did love when she was able to plan one of those superyachts. They were wild and it always meant hiring in her favourite people from their respective fields to get the plumbing, the interior architecture and the general engineering just right. She could sort of the engine on the smaller boats but those bigger ones required more skill than she had and could admit it. Everything else, she allowed the experts to deal with while she still had her hand in it all because, at the end of the day, it was her name on the build.
Tonight had been a bit of a celebration of sorts. She'd just spent the last six months working tirelessly on a yacht that would be leaving her dock in a couple of very short days when its owner finally arrived from the Bahamas. He was flying in for work in the city but would be sailing out once it was all done. The whole team had slaved over making it to the exact specifications and now they were able to relax a little and enjoy some time off before they got on to the next big build. As it was, that was a smaller job and the next would probably take them longer to finish but it was well worth the wait and her clientele knew it. She had wanted a fun night out, where she could forget about the outside world and just enjoy how the music made her feel. Being pushed into someone at the bar hadn't been in her plans but the guy she fell into didn't seem to be overly worried at the invasion so she wasn't too upset that it happened either. "Thank god, 'cause I left mine at home." She said with a laugh. "How about a drink to make up for it?" She asked quickly afterwards, just in case her joke didn't land well.
