Augury had never been the most academic type. Back in high school she had been more interested in the boy sitting in front of her than what the teacher had been saying. She had never thought about college back then, completely under the impression that life in Breckenridge would be the same small town ideals for her that her mother had lived with. She didn’t want to be like that now. She wanted to have something to be proud of in twenty years, something to boast about and say she had made for herself. It was a little bit terrifying, but then Augury was used to that familiar feeling of anxiety and uncertainty lingering in her gut. It had been there ever since she left with Isaac, leaving everything behind in that tiny town where everyone thought they had Augury all figured out. All she was to them was a flirt in tiny shorts, looking for trouble whenever she stepped out the front door.
She’d probably give them a heart attack now. The tiny shorts were still there, and there were moments when Augury didn’t even realise she was smiling just that way at that stranger, but she was in a relationship with Isaac, and planning her own future. She was being serious for once in her life, asking him what he’d like for dinner while looking over college guides about what her Geology course would entail. Elements of the past Augury would always remain, but she didn’t want to be the girl people looked at and thought trashy thoughts. She wanted to better herself. She wanted Isaac to be proud of her when he introduced her to his work buddies and not just have to take the jokes about the age difference. That wasn’t something Augury herself had ever cared about. She didn’t look at Isaac and see someone who was much older than her. She just saw someone who had been there for her when no one else was, and someone who she was completely, utterly attracted to. He had been the good in Breckenridge. Her hero in not-so-flattering tan, but she’d always tell him he could pull it off well.
After finishing up some little bits of shopping after work, Augury headed home. She’d collected some general household bits, but stopped to buy a notebook she couldn’t resist and now had an excuse to own since her classes would be starting in September. She still had to get around to making sure she was organised, but there was time. This was just a giddy treat she had wanted from the moment she had seen it that morning on her way to the Teaposium. The walk home wasn’t a long one, and Augury usually liked it to clear her head. She had walked a lot back home and it was a healthy habit she wasn’t keen on dropping. Just like she took the stairs over the elevator to the apartment, just to say she was being healthy. She had to fumble in her bag to find her keys, but when she did find them and get the door open, she noticed the noise already inside to suggest Isaac was already home before her. Maybe her shopping took a little longer than she thought. “You’re home already?” She called, toeing her shoes off by the door like she always did.

Isaac's life had never been as simple as his small hometown suggested. High school had been full of shenanigans and then he'd gone on to become one of the people that protected the area; a deputy sheriff. The uniform was bad, no matter how well he swore he pulled it off, the night shifts, hell, most of the shifts were boring as hell and he spent most of his time with his feet up on his desk, doing the homework required of him for that education he wanted. No one gave two damns they were basically paying him to finish school, as long as he answered the phone and went out on the calls, he could do whatever he wanted; within reason anyway. He figured they probably thought having his education would make him a better cop and it had. He'd learned so much, showed so much potential that the FBI took a interest in him. It had been a longer, tougher process than he'd thought but Isaac was committed and had wanted nothing more than to have that federal badge.
He had made plans to head over to New York on his own with only a few people knowing he was even leaving in the first place. He only had a few close friends who had known of his plans and the men he worked with. Isaac had planned on leaving like a ghost on the wind, simply disappear but he hadn't quite been able to go that way; not alone anyway. He hadn't been able to leave Augury after seeing her on his doorstep looking like that. He swore to protect those who needed his protection and the spitfire was exactly that. He felt bad that they had left with o my the clothing on her back but he had also known it wouldn't have been good for anyone involved if they'd gone by her place to collect whatever would fit into his car. Isaac hadn't been a cop anymore when Augury had shown up and he couldn't very well get arrested days before he was meant to start the next phase of his career as a federal agent.
In truth, Isaac loved having Augury with him through that road trip. He would have absolutely hated it going alone. His music would have been blasted and that would have been the only sound in the car. With Augury, there was laughter and jokes and singing off-key to the music blasting through the stereo system. He had someone to talk to when the nights got a little boring and Isaac felt like they got into a good routine. He had even liked shopping with her when they'd gotten into the city and she'd needed to pick up a whole new wardrobe. He liked treating her, it was what she deserved and so much more. He hoped the city would open her up again. He still remembered how extroverted she'd been back home and he missed that happy girl. It was nice to see that girl coming back around again.
With his case closed earlier than he'd expected, Isaac's boss sent him home to get some rest. No one knew when he'd get a call to come back in so he would take whatever time off he was given and savour it. He decided on the lift ride down that if he was home before Augury, he would surprise her with dinner, knowing if he wasn't she'd have already started something. He stopped and picked up what he would need for dinner and made one more stop along the way before pulling into his parking spot and taking it all back out again. Absently he locked it up before heading inside, upstairs and into the apartment he called home. Cooking set his mind at ease and he usually liked cooking when he hit a wall with a case. It gave him time to let his mind wander and work it out for him. It was usually how he came to most of his ideas and answers. "Case closed early." He called over his shoulder, knowing she would find herself in the kitchen soon enough to see the first surprise he had for her.

There was a lot Augury would change about her life if she could. She was young, but she had made hundreds of mistakes. A whole town thought the worst of her because of the paths she had chosen in her life. There was one thing she never wished to change though, and that was her relationship with Isaac. He was her rock. She wasn’t sure if he knew just how much she cared about him. The flirting had been fun, a way to push his buttons, but from the start she had always wanted something more from him. Everyone else had been fun, a youthful fling that had seemed fun at the time. Isaac was the man she didn’t give up on though. Even through the hardest of times she wanted to turn to him, feel his arms around her as he told her everything would be alright. Augury had done some crazy things in her life, but leaving Breckenridge in the dead of the night with Isaac was by far the craziest. She had nothing but the clothes on her back, and the money on her bag. It was also the best thing she had ever done.
New York had been a terrifying place at first. She had no plan, no job, and knew no one beyond the man she came there with. Augury had taken a long time to feel at home there. For the first few weeks she only felt safe and comfortable when Isaac was at home. After that she knew it wasn’t a way to live. She started looking for a job, finding her perfect spot at the Teaposium. It wasn’t anything flashy, but it was nice. It was just what she needed for a fresh start. She still couldn’t believe she was going to college now. It was unthinkable back in Breckenridge, and even now it seemed surreal. For the first time in her life, with Isaac’s help, she had dreams and ambitions that were more than finding a man.
She didn’t need another when Isaac was perfect for her. Her favourite moments were just being snuggled on the couch with him, even if they were doing two different things. He could be watching TV and Augury could be curled up against him with a book or magazine, and she still felt happy. It was feeling his warmth, smelling his cologne, and knowing he was hers. At one point it had seemed like a far off dream, but now she went to bed in his shirts and stole his sweaters when she was cold in their apartment. Even now, coming home to find he was there before her put a small smile on her face. It was a rarity, and instantly Augury was thinking of the time they could have together. She dropped her bags on the chair in the hall and moved through to the kitchen. “Something smells really good.” She said with a smile, sliding her arms around Isaac’s waist and pushing herself on her toes to press a sweet kiss to the back of his neck. “Night in?” She suggested, nuzzling him adoringly.
