FREYJA MIELIKKI TAMMINEN
FULL NAME: Freyja Mielikki Tamminen.
NICKNAMES: Frey.
AGE: twenty-one.
SEXUALITY: straight.
STATUS: single
GROUP: student
GRADE: junior.
MAJOR: criminology & social sciences.
JOB OCCUPATION: Whitney Gift Shop.
HAIR: blonde, sometimes with a flash of dye in it. Freyja usually wears it messy, teased and pretty crazy. She’s been known to experiment with her style and her hair is a big part of that. She’s been a fan of dreads, different sprays and really going wild with it. If she does wear it up, she usually still finds a way to keep the messy style and will only tame it if she has somewhere formal to be, which is rare.
EYES: blue.
SCARS/BIRTHMARKS: She has a ton from sporting accidents over the years, though she’s pretty certain that her number of broken bones outweighs her number of stitches…
TATTOOS: She has a triquetra tattooed on her left wrist, “I have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night.” wrapped around her right wrist. “Learning to Fly” complete with a set of wings leading into the initial L on her right ribs. Finally, she has a tiny white star in the centre of a green oak leaf on the back of her neck which leads down to a knot-work heart at the top of her back. The last tattoo is symbolic of old mythology from both sides of her heritage and from the name her ahku gives her now.
PIERCINGS: Her earlobes just the once, left rook and conch and a nose piercing.
PLAY-BY: Juno Temple!
LIKES: snowboarding, skiing, true crime shows, northern lights, hot cocoa, underground clubs, ice skating, roller-skating, quirky art, Halloween, horror movie festivals, photography, costume parties, green tea, winter, European mythology, classic tragedies, raspberry vodka, drinking games, library archives, psychology books, superstitions, old Finnish beliefs, ice hockey, folklore, bears, dancing, bracelets, forests, fashion and style experiments, innocent mischief, hanging with friends, playing her Kantele, solving puzzles, feathers, candyfloss, nail polish, bars, ghost stories, crime novels, confident people, journals, being trilingual, mysteries.
DISLIKES: McDonalds, really hot days, New York snow, the subway, spring cleaning, cats, breaking bones – it slows her down, feeling numb, people judging her too much, missing home, the neighbour who tries to stare into her apartment, falling asleep at her desk, holes in socks, politics, misery, blueberries, almonds, driving, telemarketers, hunting, liquorice, hospital waiting rooms, chick-flicks, romance novels, algebra, friends hurting, assumptions based on nothing, formal events, feeling angry, pearls, salted popcorn, sneezing, violent protests, fireworks, dried up franchises, fake plants/flowers, drunken confessions, losing pens..
FEARS: someone getting inside her head, ventriloquist dummies, choking
SECRETS: She has this recurring dream where she’s trapped in a maze of mirrors, but the reflection she sees is her doppelganger. It chases her, taunts her and tries to “possess” her. Whenever Freyja has this dream she wakes up in a cold sweat and usually doesn’t sleep again until she passes out at her desk or on her couch!
PERSONALITY: Freyja is quite calm when you first meet her and quiet, but she’s not shy. However, the more you get to know her, the more you see! She has a dark humour that can be quite sarcastic at times. She’s not about to say no to trying something new and while “YOLO” makes her want to punch the nose off of someone’s face, she does believe in living for the moment. She’s a fan of winter sports and has practiced for years herself, so she’s got an active streak in her that she wishes she could bring out more. Spirited and determined, it takes a lot for Freyja to back down from something once she’s set her mind to it. Some might call her stubborn but she prefers to look at it more as a strong curious nature that won’t go away until all of her questions have been answered with the truth. Sometimes she can push too much or open doors supposed to stay shut, but she never realises until after the damage is done and pre-warning her only proves a waste of breathe; if there’s a mystery, she has to solve it. She’s open minded and often keeps her personal opinions to herself to avoid treading on anyone else’s toes. Freyja doesn’t talk about herself much, believing that the more she keeps to herself the less people can use against her. She doesn’t have anything to hide; she just doesn’t see why the whole of New York should know her life story. She has a fascination for the macabre that she inherited from her parents and that has always crept its way through into her daily life and her choices, which means she can sometimes come across to others as a little bit odd. She doesn’t mind the teasing or the comments though, because Freyja has always felt comfortable with herself and simply dresses and styles herself to suit however she feels. Her family were always very rooted in old ways, since her parents came from smaller communities away from the cities and quite a bit of this has passed on to Freyja, which is why she is so invested in maintaining traditions and superstitions, even now that she’s in NYC. She’s relaxed and it takes a lot for the young blonde to feel stressed out by the daily grind, at least. Freyja has always had a knack for solving puzzles and it’s now something that she considers to be part of her core sense of self. She’s educated and pretty smart having spent her childhood reading up on the things that intrigued her and listening to “lessons” from her ahku and paapa. She’s got a good handle on her temper and isn’t usually the girl in the middle of any kind of fight, but like everyone else, she has pet peeves that do leave her swearing at someone in her native tongue. If she does snap at someone without good reason to, then she’s quick to apologise for her mistake, even if it’s embarrassing to her; she was raised better than that. She’s philosophical, but has no time to waste on fancy dreams and ideals. Freyja can tell of her dreams and ambitions, but there are no fairy tales or silly fancies floating around in her head. That means that when it comes to romance Freyja is more about the sparks than the house and the white wedding. She’d rather have the passion and the love than the stereotypical ideal of happy ever after!

HISTORY: Both native to Finland, Matias and Anita only met after Anita moved from her childhood region of Ostrobothnia to the capital city of the Lapland province; Rovaniemi. Anita met Matias after she obtained a job working with the crime labs as a forensic scientist, which was what she had spent years preparing for before finally fleeing up north after a bad break up and the need for a fresh start. Matias was a relatively fresh face at the Medical Examiner’s office, but he was a hard worker and a talented young man who soon fell hard for Anita. His parents lived outside of the city and had a much more traditional approach to life and their beliefs which Anita struggled with understanding at first; beliefs and even the culture was different where she was from and she had spent her whole life speaking Swedish rather than the Finnish she needed to up in Rovaniemi in order to communicate with everyone. Fate must’ve had a grand plan for them both though, as they married one summer and Ahti came the following spring when the snow was still melting away.
Nine more years passed before Freyja came into the world, earning her names from her collective family who, by this point, were extremely close to each other. Whenever her parents were at work, she was in the care of her dad’s parents who told her the same tales they had told Ahti when he was little. Freyja was more captivated by them than her brother was, even reading about them herself once she was old enough to understand the words on the pages of the library books her mother bought home for her. Given the nature of her parent’s jobs, Freyja was also around the darker side of life from a young age. Matias and Anita tried to keep it away from their children, but little people made good spies and their little ears would pick things up when they crept passed the office to get a drink or a snack and then it was only a matter of time before one curious mind asked about it at the dinner table. They omitted the worse parts of course, but they couldn’t lie to their own children who understood what their parents did. For a curious mind like Freyja’s though, knowing wasn’t enough. She was constantly asking questions and asking if she could go to work with them. She was too little, but her parents indulged her wishes as best as they could with games and silly little “crime kits” that they could buy in shops.
At school, Freyja was often teased for being different. She spoke proudly about her parent’s work and how her father “cut open dead people”. Plus, if her nose wasn’t buried in another book about northern European mythology then she was telling anyone who would listen about the folklore and the superstitions that Roosa had told her about since she was a tiny little thing with wide blue eyes and messy blonde braids. It was hurtful, at first, but another tale and another confidence boost from ahku and Freyja felt able to rise above it all. Whenever the kids pushed her buttons she would just recall the memory of the stories Roosa told her and let it wash away the hurt. Strangely, it worked and soon the other kids grew bored of teasing her to her face and the nicknames they sometimes called her in the hallways lacked so much originality all she could do was roll her eyes at them.
She stayed close to her family as she grew up and even annoyed Ahti with countless phone calls when he left the family home to attend college to study law. With the amount of snow they were used to, it made sense that she would quickly find her feet on a snowboard and a pair of skis. They provided her with outlets that brought new friendships into her life and kept her out of getting into trouble with gangs or drugs like some of the kids at her school had done. She played ice hockey for the school girls’ team and kept her parents on their toes with countless trips to the ER. By the time she was fifteen she had lost count of the amount of time she had broken her fingers. As for the rest of her, there had a been a dislocated left shoulder, a fractured left wrist, a collarbone fracture and a broken right hand…she didn’t let it deter her though and once physio and healing were complete, Freyja was instantly back out there.
Her fascination with the macabre didn’t waver as she hit her teenage years and eventually Matias agreed to take her into the morgue for the high school work experience programme, since he was feeling exhausted by the energetic teenager forever asking him about his job and watching true crime shows on the TV in her bedroom. He was noticing that as she memorised the various myths and legends from her heritage the books of those topics were being replaced by crime books. At least this way he could keep a safe eye on his curious daughter. While she was there, Freyja found that her biggest question out of everything was why. Why were these victims killed? What was the logic behind the murder and the weapons used? She kept asking these questions that Matias wasn’t used to being asked by anyone else there. Eventually, at the end of her time there, one of his colleagues suggested that he give one of the criminal psychologists a call if Freyja was still interested, which she was.
After a lunch with the man, Freyja had a path in mind for her future. She had always known that she would probably wind up going into a branch of law enforcement like the rest of her family; the fascination was just that strong. However, after meeting with the man who Matias had contacted, she was considering a different route and thinking about approaching everything from that angle where getting into the mind of the criminal could make a huge difference to the outcome of a case. After looking into the idea in more detail, she realised that the greatest chance of getting the best qualifications for such a job laid in America. It was a massive thing to consider and one she didn’t jump into straight away, but it was her Ahku and Paapa who talked her into it; they told her that fate had designed this path for her long before she realised it and that it was her destiny to do this work in the world.
So, she spent the rest of high school making the necessary arrangements, sitting the correct aptitude tests and making the most of her final weeks as a high school student. She was accepted to a school in New York and it was Ahti who came with her when she made the initial move. The language barrier was no problem for her since her parents had insisted on both children being tutored in English from a very young age. With Rovaniemi being such a tourist spot in Lapland and the last city before the Arctic Circle it had always been useful and by adulthood, both Ahti and Freyja were trilingual.
The move was terrifying, but Ahti took the time off from the law firm he worked at to help Freyja settle in to the apartment she had found and stayed for a few more weeks until she had a job secured and school was ready to start up for the nervous but eager blonde.
Freshman and sophomore year seemed to fly by. Freyja made great grades, asked the right questions and made amazing friends along the way. The weekends were for parties, shopping and mischief and the end of semester came with the promise of a return to Rovaniemi and her family. She flirted, dated and experimented with a new culture and new people, but Freyja remained true to herself and her roots, ensuring to stick by the old traditions and superstitions that had been handed down to her. It’s all about living and Freyja isn’t about to forget any of that.
