SECRETS: He loves building houses and creating neighbourhoods on The Sims 4. He loves watching them live out their lives and meeting each other.
PERSONALITY: Lorcan is a bookworm; he would always have his nose in a book if he could. He’s kind hearted and polite to a fault. He’s easily frustrated, but not the type to snap at others. He internalises that frustration and usual goes quiet – well, quieter than normal. He’s generally on the soft spoken side to begin with. That’s not to be confused with shyness. That would be the last thing Lorcan ever was. He’s confident, and friendly enough to approach strangers or address a room full of people with ease. He just doesn’t care for the loud and the brashness of some people. If there are traits he doesn’t like in others, he tries to avoid them in himself, too. He’s family-centric, and (with reasonable excuses) doesn’t have time for those who push away relatives or neglect familial duties. He’s loyal to his kin first, and the world second. He will, however, tell them when they’re in the wrong. He’s quite good at being a moral compass for some people, but not all. There are people who find him too ‘boring’ for not being the party-on-the-weekend type. Lorcan is comfortable with who he is though, and he won’t change for others. His failings in romance have mostly been due to work or family taking up too much of his time – or the fact that he’s still in friendly contact with his ex-fiancée. He is a traditional romantic though. The kind who doesn’t want someone in his bed on the first date, who likes to learn a girl’s favourite flowers, and hold doors open from time to time. There’s a chivalrous streak in him that isn’t glaringly obvious – mostly because everything Lorcan does is subtle.MOTHER: Miranda Lillian Wise, 58.
FATHER: Thomas William Wise, 62.
SIBLINGS: Niamh Margaret Wise, 26
OTHERS: Amanda Jade Layton, 27, ex-fiancée.
PETS: He has “joint custody” of a stray cat with his upstairs neighbour. They were both feeding her and now she stays between the two apartments. They call her Lola.
HOMETOWN: Saranac Lake.
HISTORY: Miranda and Thomas were the type of couple who had a fiery relationship. They loved passionately, but also fought passionately (when they fought, that is). Many people who saw those explosive fights thought that they would never last, but they weren’t around to see them make up again. The pair did love each other, and they really were soulmates. It just took them a long time to figure it out between the excitement of their twenties and the hot-headedness that they both shared. When they did commit to each other – in a spring wedding with cherry blossom trees and a surprising forecast of snow – they both knew it was forever.
After they settled into a house, renovated it the way they wanted to, and found that stability they knew they needed, they started talking about a family. It didn’t take too long before Miranda discovered she was pregnant, and it felt like the time just flew by before she was holding her baby boy in her arms. Thomas had to fight for a chance to hold him sometimes. They named him Lorcan – a family name from Miranda’s Irish heritage – and William, after Thomas and his father before him. He was a quiet baby, one who grew into a well behaved toddler who often surprised people when he crept into a room almost silently.
His little sister was born when he was still toddling around, coming to grips with letters and shapes. Lorcan was the doting big brother from the moment he knew he was going to be one. It didn’t change. Even when she cried through teething, or broke a toy or two when they were children. He was the boy who basically warned everyone that he was her big brother, and looked out for her no matter what happened. If their parents were having one of their short lived, but very loud, fights, he was there with headphones and distractions for her. If she ever messaged him when they were teenagers, he’d drop everything, cancel a date, the works, to go and help her (or chase away some guy who needed to be chased away). Becoming an older brother really made Lorcan focus on his family, and care for the people who shared his DNA.
When he understood what a book was, he was always carrying one. At first he liked to look at the pictures and understand the stories from them, but when he got older he fell in love with reading. In school he was always the kid with the book in his bag, sitting in a corner at recess to read. He got teased for it, but the bullies gave up on him when they realised that Lorcan didn’t actually care. He liked reading. He enjoyed the stories. No one was going to take that from him. After that, more kids approached him and became his friends. He was the kid many of them turned to when they wanted to know something, acting like Lorcan was some walking encyclopaedia. He wasn’t a know-it-all, or the brainiest kid in the class, but he was the type who was curious enough to go and find an answer. Once he realised that there was something he didn’t know, he had to resolve it – even if it was just some useless little fact that he would forget a week later.
Lorcan always knew he wanted to help people. He had never strayed from wanting a career in the medical profession. He had considered doctor for most of his childhood, but as he got older that shifted over to paramedic. He had always worked best under pressure, and hospitals kind of made him feel nauseous. He discovered that when a bad stomach bug left him dehydrated and needing to spend a few days in a ward when he was a teenager. It was the lights and the sterile smell that just left him feeling so very cold. It was also that stomach bug that introduced him to daytime TV and Judge Judy. She became his guilty pleasure. He didn’t even watch a lot of TV, so it surprised him to watch such car crashes and find them entertaining.
He went to college to study to become a paramedic. It was during those fast paced years that he got engaged to Amanda. They had grown up together, been kinda, sorta dating through high school but got serious during college. They both went to NYU so they had spent more time together, got caught up in city life and everything was a whirlwind that saw a small, somewhat inexpensive diamond appear on her finger just before senior year. They were truly in love, and Lorcan never regretted proposing to her, even after they broke up.
Becoming a paramedic changed a lot for him. He had never been a party boy, but the amount of call outs that were drink related definitely curbed his own alcohol intake. He went down to having less than a handful of drinks when he was out. He actually lost some friends over that, but Lorcan found that he preferred keeping his senses about him. Plus, there was never any harm in someone being the sensible one when everyone else was going crazy. That was also when the rift began to appear in the romance with Amanda. They were working opposing hours a lot of the time, and trying to save for their own place. A lot was working against them and one date night at his place they kind of addressed the dying spark. They admitted that neither of them were to blame for it; it was just their lives were so far from settled. The romance was dead, but their friendship wasn’t. They called time on their relationship, but people were shocked as hell that they were still friends who could go out and grab food and enjoy the weekend together. Lorcan had been friends with Amanda since he was five – that shit didn’t fade away overnight.
He got on with his life, enjoying the same things most people did. He still loved his books more than the social scene, but he wasn’t a hermit by any means. He went out, kept an eye on his friends, and went home when he could for a homecooked meal. His friends, sister, and job were his life. He’d love for one day to have his own family, his own home, but he still considers himself to have plenty of sand in his hourglass for that!
