LIKES: skinny jeans, apple slices, morning workouts, the colour red, the city at night, cloudy lemonade, getting out of trouble unscathed, loud music, thunderstorms, black jack, big cities, talking to strangers, vodka cocktails, underground clubs, horror movies, rice dishes, acting like a doofus, shoes, doing handstands against a wall, procrastinating online, classic arcade games.
DISLIKES: hangovers, gossip magazines, ridiculously hot days, getting caught in thunderstorms, spiders, goodbyes, sad movies, fights with friends, googly eyes, noises late at night that wake her up, clowns, falling asleep when she’s not in her bed, pistachios, screaming children, pessimism, being clumsy so much, dry chicken, heights, trigonometry, floral patterns, daytime TV.
FEARS: heights, big spiders, death.
SECRETS: She loves her horror movies, but often spends the night after she’s watched one sleeping with her hand closed rightly around a baseball bat and jumping up at the slightest bump in the night. It doesn’t stop her from watching the movies though!
PERSONALITY: Lethe is a pretty spunky character with a sharp tongue and a penchant for getting herself into trouble by accident. Usually it’s because she exaggerates or turns over-dramatic and then her daring streak comes out when she’s trying to prove herself to be more than her words. She puts on a tough front, but she’s pretty vulnerable beneath that act of hers. She’s so curious that it probably borders on rude most of the time, but Lee has been like that ever since she was a little girl and she really dislikes knowing that someone is keeping secrets from her, even if it’s none of her business. Mostly energetic, Lee is the kind of girl to enjoy busy days or nights when she can have some fun, too. She does value her alone time though, and often talks her way out of invites just so she can relax in her own apartment. She has a very creative imagination that conjures up some insane thoughts from time to time and leaves her jumping during the night after a bad dream or a mysterious bump. The kind of girl who will try everything at least once, Lee often overestimates her own capabilities which does work against her, especially if a good friend isn’t around to help her out of whatever fix she’s managed to land herself in. She’s clumsy, noticeably so, and isn’t a stranger to bumps and bruises. Hot-headed and emotional you can never predict how Lee will react to a situation or problem. Her confrontations are usually impulsive and sometimes land her out of her depth, but at least she’s passionate about the things that do spark her off. She isn’t gaga for romance and usually misses when someone is flirting with her. Usually too busy living her life for the moment, Lethe isn’t exactly the kind to put a lot of thought into future romances, but she’s had her heart broken in the past and might be a little wary of falling again, but she’s not had the chance to test that out.

HISTORY: Sally was a doctor of anthropology crossing Europe on a study of European ancestry and attending a few of the archaeological digs out there when her travels took her to Slovakia. A conference in the town of Nitra found her being introduced to Andrej Prochazka. He was a historian on the research team helping excavate one of the older caves in the region and she was instantly taken by him, even if their conversations were marred by a slight language barrier at first. Sally wanted to know more about him though, so she extended her stay in Slovakia and put the effort into classes to perfect her understanding of Andrej’s native language. Over the next couple of months they fell harder for each other and by the time it came for Sally to leave she didn’t want to go and when Andrej asked her to stay she instantly said yes. A few more years of happy bliss and they were married with their first child on the way; a healthy little boy called Makhai.
A few years later and Lethe came along in the middle of the night and caused quite a lot of chaos on the day of her birth. She was two weeks early to start with, the car refused to start and then at the hospital there were a lack of beds for the first two hours and then Sally was finally taken to a private room only to have to endure another gruelling twenty hours of labour for her little girl to arrive. During that, Andrej got lost in the hospital when he tried to find his own parents and a fire alarm was set off at the worst possible moment. It was like something you’d expect to see in a slapstick comedy, but at the end of it all Lethe was a healthy baby with a thick crop of jet black hair and piercing blue eyes.
Her childhood was pretty normal. Her parents worked together in the centre of the town and the children had a nanny during the working hours who took them to the park and kept them thoroughly entertained. When school started, it was their nanny who made sure their homework was mostly done before the parents came home so that they could all make the most of the evening and the family time they had together. Sally raised her children to speak English as well as their own native language, although they kept that for whenever they were on the phone to their grandparents and other relatives in America.
She was always pretty close with her big brother, even when they were terrorising each other with pranks and jokes and generally annoying the hell out of everyone else around them. She had a habit of talking a little too much and her curiosity often led to her saying or doing something that would land her in trouble. Most of the time, she was saved by Makhai, but there were still a few teachers who expected a handful each time she entered their classroom.
Lee was ten when Sally and Andrej decided to relocate. Their research had earned attention back in America and Sally had been offered a fantastic position that she probably wouldn’t ever receive again. They discussed it and after convincing the head of the team to take Andrej on board, too, they explained to their children that they would be moving to Las Vegas, Nevada. The children didn’t take it too well at first and sulked the whole way there. Even at their new house, complete with modest size pool they were still pouting and glaring. It took them a short while to adjust, make new friends and adapt to a new culture, but soon enough they were getting comfortable with their new lives in Las Vegas, aside from a few rebellious hiccups here and there.
When Lethe was fifteen she met Joel. He was Makhai’s best friend and usually the two of them were out in the city living their lives and probably getting into all kind of harmless trouble. It was in the winter that Makhai dislocated his knee during gym class and the pair started spending more time at the house. Joel was attractive and Lee noticed. She spent as much time around them as she could without Makhai snapping at her for being annoying, sneaking glances at Joel. He didn’t exactly miss her either and soon Lee was more than his best friend’s little sister. Makhai was far from pleased when he found out about their feelings or the secret flirting that had been going on whenever he left a room. He grumbled even more when they actually started dating, even commenting about how “unfair” it was on him that he had to give the big brother routine to his best friend. Deep down, he was pretty happy for the pair, but he had to keep his part of the protective big brother, which he was, but he could hardly be mad for long when Lee was so happy.
She was relatively okay in other areas of her teenage years. She had a trustworthy circle of friends who could put up with her dramatic and energetic ways, didn’t really let the words of bullies hit her hard and made decent enough grades should she decide to attend college. At the time when it came around to making those decisions, Lee had no idea what she wanted to do with her life and her parents advised her against jumping into something just because it seemed like she ought to. She hadn’t quite found her passion yet, so after graduation she stayed in Vegas and got herself a job in one of the casinos. Joel had been at a local university campus with Makhai for the last three years, so nothing was really strained between the pair at first and Lethe felt confident that she had made the right decision for herself in waiting to find her passion before going off to college and deciding out the rest of her life.
Time passed, and after dating Joel for six years by the time she hit twenty-one, people were beginning to wonder if they’d be the high school sweethearts. He had graduated and was working as an intern for a well-known company and she was still working the tables in one of the casinos on The Strip, saving her money and closing in on finding her dream. Over the years she had helped her parents out with their work, asked questions and played the curious girl, but once high school was over she had found her interest growing. She spent more time with them at home on her days off, reading their papers and mooching through the findings scribbled in old journals from the years gone by. She asked more questions of her parents, specifically her mother and then began checking out the courses offered by different colleges. It wasn’t set in stone at that point in time, but it was definitely an idea that had taken root in her mind.
It was in the spring that things changed. Joel told her that he needed to speak to her and that was the start of the painful break up that Lee likes to try to forget. He said that he still loved her, but needed to take some time to go and “find himself” and examine what he really wanted in life. The company he worked for had offered him a promotion in a Utah branch and he was curious to accept, but didn’t know if anything was the right thing anymore. He planned to take a year to go off on his own on a road trip and get his head on straight. Lethe didn’t hear much of the conversation since she was too busy pinching herself to see if it was a horrible dream. Makhai hardly reacted kindly to the news either, finding and throwing a punch at his best friend on behalf of his sister’s broken heart. If Joel expected to find Lethe when he came back then he would be surprised to discover that she wouldn’t be there.
Her brother suggested that she move on with her life and take that chance she had been debating for the past few months. He also suggested a school and a home away from Vegas, at least for college. She was offered a place in New York and hastily packed her bags and made her way out there. A modest apartment from her casino earnings and a part time job at an art gallery would see her through. The time passed and life was good; at least, she was moving on from Joel’s heartbreak and focusing on her own dreams again.
When Joel returned to Vegas, Lethe was sitting her final exams of her freshman year. He tried to contact her, but Makhai talked him out of it, warning him to let Lee live out the college years without the stress and conflict of him coming back into her life. She suspected he was back in Vegas, but since she only visited for a week and spent most of that with her family, Lee did nothing about it. She didn’t know what she wanted back there, if it was Joel, a career or nothing at all. There was no knowing what the future might hold or if Las Vegas would soon be just a place she once lived…
