PERSONALITY: For as long as she can remember, Juliet was raised to be very family-orientated. She turns to them for any and every decision that she’s struggling with. She’s a calm and polite girl most of the time, but growing up in a male dominated household, she can also pack a punch if pushed too far. For the most part, she’s pretty patient and she can take quite a lot in a bad day before she’ll just throw the towel in and storm off. She’s strong and it takes a lot to knock her down, but it just makes her even more determined to ensure that her daughter gets the best life she can possibly give her. Jules has a heart of gold and is almost entirely selfless; it’s not uncommon for her to give up something she wants to make someone else happy. Despite appearing down to earth, Jules is a bit of a dreamer. Life hasn’t exactly worked out the way that she planned it to, so she still clings to the hopes that something out of her daydreams might actually come true. She’s protective and loyal to the people she cares about and will often be the first to jump to their defence or offer them help. She’s friendly and polite and will always offer to do a kind deed or help someone, even if they’re a complete stranger on the street. It can make her a little easy to be used, but at the same time, it’s not wise she ever finds out someone is taking advantage of her, because she’s still not afraid to put them in their place if she thinks it’s necessary. If threatened, she’ll attack, be it verbally or physically, but she tries not to let it come to that. As for romance, Jules has been pretty unlucky, but she’s still passionate and hopeful that it’ll work out for her in the end. Obviously, she has to put Mariella first, but she still finds herself getting the butterflies and the hopeless smile whenever she meets a great guy.

HISTORY: Roberto came to America when he was a teenager. The family came from Messina, Sicily and made the move purely to try and make a better life for themselves. Roberto was just fifteen when he met Gabriella, who played hard to get for their high school years, but it never deterred Roberto who was determined that he would one day marry her. Hey, he was right! After finally giving in and letting him have a chance, Gabriella saw a hell of a lot more under that cheeky charm than she was expecting and they married when they were both still young.
They had four sons before their daughter came along, adding a contrast to the family. Growing up with four brothers, Jules was pretty tough and able to hold her own in any family fights or sibling rivalry contests. She loved watching football with her family, chasing her brothers around the yard, but she was not really that much of a tomboy. She liked pretty colours, flowers and helping her ma out just as much as she loved yelling at a player for a bad play. Her mother wanted to pass on all the family recipes, often letting Juliet help at meal times when she was little and gradually showing her more and more as she grew older.
At school, Juliet did pretty well. She made decent grades, got along well enough with her teachers and had some close friends that couldn’t let her down. Any bullies were chased away by her brothers if she didn’t get there first. It was a regular childhood with messy braids, embarrassing dresses and fights with her brothers. It was a loud house, a big family and the holidays were even bigger. Both Roberto and Gabriella came from large, close families and the holidays were just chaotic with more people than the houses could fit. In the summer they returned to Messina to learn more about their heritage and visit the family that still lived in Italy. The summer was more of a road trip across the European country, but no one ever complained. They loved it and got spoilt rotten most of the time by their relatives over there.
Jules was sixteen when Tyler transferred to her high school. He had the desk next to hers in algebra and it wasn’t long before he grew into her first love. She was very much head over heels for him and him for her. He came from a good family, got along well with her brothers despite how often they tried to intimidate him and regularly had dinner with the family. They seemed like some perfect little couple and Roberto and Gabriella often commented how they saw the early days of their own relationship in the actions of the two young lovebirds. Not even high school drama or the stresses of college could tear them apart. Juliet had dreams of going to culinary school in New York and expanding on the recipes handed down to her through the family. Tyler, on the other hand, wanted to be a teacher, but also had no intention of moving to the other side of the country. Everyone had a lot of hope for the young couple.
It wasn’t long into senior year that Jules started to feel sick. She couldn’t keep her food down, constantly felt dizzy and she was exhausted. A trip to the doctor left her reeling in shock, on the verge of tears as she first told Tyler and then her family the news. She was pregnant. Immediately her father and brothers were in rage, screaming at Tyler while Gabriella tried to console and calm Juliet who was already up and trying to get involved herself. Never had she let her brothers fight her battles for her, she never admitted when she needed them and she certainly wasn’t sitting back to let them accuse and point the blame when it wasn’t just Tyler who could be held responsible. Obviously her plans were out of the window. She graduated high school with a swollen belly and a deferred acceptance letter that she wouldn’t touch again for another three years.
With the support of Tyler and her family, Juliet gave birth to a healthy daughter. They called her Mariella Giselle. Juliet remained in the family home with the baby while Tyler commuted to school for his college education. He practically moved in, too, helping Jules whenever he could with their daughter. Everything was great for a while. If Jules was struggling she had her ma around to offer support and babysit on date nights, Tyler was doing well in college and talking about saving up for a place of their own…Juliet even managed to get a job in Madame Tussauds as a tour guide for a few afternoons in the week. It meant they had money to save up and to put towards the cost of raising a baby.
Mariella was two when the cracks appeared in her parent’s relationship. They spent less time talking and more time just passing comment about chores, jobs or bills. In the end, Juliet couldn’t take it anymore. She was twenty and felt forty in their relationship. Tyler moved out and back to his own parents, but the split was amicable. They remained good friends for the sake of their daughter and the clashes over the years were few and far between and usually centred around one parent saying yes when another had said no. For the most part, they made it work without even thinking about the courts or lawyers. Neither had done anything wrong, but the romance had just fizzled out and their interests were elsewhere.
Juliet was stuck. She had her job, but it was far from the one she had dreamed of. Her idea of family had crumbled apart and she was still living with her parents while her daughter took over Orlando’s old bedroom once he married and left home. Gabriella encouraged Jules to chase her dreams again. She didn’t want to see her daughter regretful in later years. Juliet explained that it just wasn’t practical, but Gabriella was having none of it. What was family for if not to help each other out? She practically forced the phone and the old letter into Jules’ hand and then waited in the room while her daughter made arrangements for another shot at her dream school. No one was surprised when Juliet got in! In recent years she had been taking more and more responsibility cooking the family dishes and perfecting her skills. Gabriella explained that she could look after Mariella while Jules worked and attended class. Grandma wanted to spoil her first grandchild like there was no tomorrow, and with mama away she could do that!
Eventually, after a lot of hard work, long nights and balancing of responsibilities, Jules had the qualifications she had been chasing she was a little girl. It meant she had more time for her daughter again, just in time before she started school! The only problem was that it was hard to get a job with the hours to suit her needs. Most places needed evening hours and Juliet had to worry about Mariella. She also wanted to move out of her family home and get her own place. She had money saved up for a down payment on a small apartment for them both, but she needed a reliable job to keep the rent coming in. Most people see promotions as a good thing, but getting accepted for the position of general manager at Madame Tussauds didn’t exactly get Jules in a celebratory mood. She just saw it as a chance to have extra money each month in case anything broke or Mariella needed new clothes or money for a field trip. The hours suited her, with one late evening when Gabriella and Roberto would spoil the little girl. Tyler kept in regular contact, calling every other night to make plans, check dates or just to see how things were going. He helped out where he could with costs, despite Jules telling him he didn’t need to.
Now, with an apartment of her own, Mariella growing more every day and a job she tolerates, Juliet is back to daydreaming about wanting more from her life. She’s starting catering events on the side whenever she can, trying to get a foot into the door of culinary arts, but it’s still difficult to find a job suited to her. She longs for her own little bistro, but it’s nothing more than a dream in a journal for now while she prioritises everything else first. She’s happy with what she has, loves her daughter more than anything else, but she still has to wonder if there’s more out there for her.
