DISLIKES: Vanity, being clean shaven, feeling tired, animal print, gossip, feeling stressed, his routine being disrupted, spending too much time in the car, people who spam social media, lying to people, popcorn, dancing (he has two left feet), lying to himself, winter, sparkly things (unless it’s Christmas), a desk full of work to do, staying silent when he needs to say something, turkey.
FEARS: Losing his friendship with Owen, growing old, car crashes.
SECRETS: No one really knows that he’s gay. Maverick likes his best friend, Owen, in more than a friendly way. They shared a drunken night after Owen had a rough patch with his girlfriend, but they’ve never spoken about it and everything has been awkward since then. Maverick hasn’t been alone with him since; it’s like Owen always makes sure there’s a group around when they hang out.
PERSONALITY: Maverick is a pretty quiet guy at first, but that’s not all that there is to him. He’s actually just pretty laidback guy with a outgoing side he keeps for his friends. He’s always had a bit of an awkward side because he was never totally comfortable with what was going on with his head and his heart and sometimes that projects beyond to his outer self. Mav is an active guy. He likes to keep fit and do fun things with friends like hiking, paintballing or climbing; just something more than hanging out in another New York bar. He’s intelligent and considers himself to be a hardworking guy who has earned everything he has now. He internalises a lot of things and always has done, which does mean there are a lot of nights where he explodes with emotion but it’s always in the privacy of his own apartment because he doesn’t want to have to explain himself or his thoughts and feelings to someone else. He’s not an aggressive person, if anything he’s a mediator who likes to keep the balance between people, though if it came to it he feels like he could defend himself in a physical confrontation because he’s so fit. To Maverick, his friends mean the world to him, and they don’t come much more loyal than this man. Love is where Maverick has been most confused in his life. He’s recently accepted the fact that he is gay, but before that he was in denial of his attraction to other men and dated women. He’s got strong feelings for his best friend, Owen, but he’s still accepting who he is and building up to telling family and friends the truth. In honesty, he’s scared about how that’s going to go because of a whole host of reasons.MOTHER: Freda Lillian Winn, 57.
FATHER: Lucas Benjamin Winn, 60.
SIBLINGS: Quillan Leonardo Winn, 29.
OTHERS: Owen William Fisher, 27, best friend since college.
PETS: Harvard, a golden Labrador of three.
HOMETOWN: Defiance, Ohio.
HISTORY: Lucas and Freda grew up in the same neighbourhood and began dating in their early twenties. They married and settled into a neighbourhood just a few over from where they had grown up. Lucas was a business executive and Freda worked in a local elementary school. They had two sons, Quillan and Maverick, and they were in a very comfortable position to raise their little family.
From an early age the boys were pushed to be the best they could be. They were allowed to be as free as they wanted to be, but they had to do their best if they wanted to be able to go out with friends or get their full allowance at the weekend. Lucas was a strict father, but in a caring way. He had come from a bit of an unstable home and he had been forced to fight for everything he had, so he only wanted the best for his boys without them falling on tough times. So he pushed them to be the best their abilities allowed them to be, discouraged them from hanging out with bad influences, and emphasised how important it was for them to excel.
Maverick did fine in his classes. He made good grades and he was a kid who teachers liked. His problems started when he got older. Mav started to notice that he was looking at the boys a little more. It made him uncomfortable because he wasn’t expecting to have those kinds of feelings. He hid them, burying his desires deep down and instead went along whenever a girl showed an interest in him. He dated, had girlfriends from the age of fifteen and no one ever questioned him. He wasn’t camp, or feminine, so outwardly he didn’t give anything away about what he was truly feeling on the inside. He was in denial, and hated himself when he found his eyes or thoughts wandering.
Mav went to New York City for college. It was there that he met Owen. They were roommates in the dorm during freshman year and got on like a house on fire. Maverick didn’t feel anything more than platonic for him for the longest of time, so their four years of college was purely them forming their friendship and having fun together. Maverick was still in denial about who he was, but on the outside he faked it well enough to come across that he was comfortable in his skin and knew what he was going after in his life. It was only after graduation, during a summer of parties, drinking and settling into life as grown ups that he began to realise that he was looking at Owen with more than a friendly eye. In truth, it killed him on the inside. He didn’t want to fall for his best friend, or ruin the friendship they had formed back in the college dorms. He kept quiet, ignoring everything he was feeling. He dated women, had a few short lived relationships and buried himself in the career he started as a paralegal.
A few years went by. Maverick settled into his career, got the apartment the way he wanted it and worked his ass off for the things he wanted. His feelings for Owen lingered, but he never said anything or acted on them. Mav never did anything about his sexuality. He didn’t want to accept it, but he didn’t quite know why. He was afraid of being shunned by his family, of being mocked because he didn’t fit that stereotype, and a million other things. Owen met a woman when they were out celebrating for Mav’s twenty-fifth and from there bloomed ‘the best thing that ever happened to him’. Owen was incredibly happy with his girlfriend and Mav found it difficult to listen to him talk about her so much because he felt the green monster of jealousy rising within him, which only made him feel worse; he wanted Owen to be happy in his life!
It was a year later when Owen hit a rocky patch with his girlfriend. Time was tough and he was depending on Mav a lot more during the fights. One day, a particularly bad fight led to a break up and Mav ended up taking Owen out to take his mind off things. They both ended up drunk and back at Mav’s place where Owen was crashing. There was some complaining about women when they got there, sharing another drink together and then Mav ended up drunkenly making a move on Owen. They ended up spending the night together, but come the morning they never spoke about it. Mav was uncomfortable and awkward, and Owen was hungover and didn’t move until after lunch, but he didn’t say a single thing before he left. Mav was nervous about what was going to happen next.
Owen ended up back with his girlfriend a week later, and since then Mav hasn’t been able to get him alone again. He’s not sure if Owen is deliberately staying in crowded places or groups with him, or if he’s just being paranoid about everything. He doesn’t even know if Owen remembers or if he was so drunk it’s all a blacked out blur. After that night, which was his first experience at all with a man, Mav is coming to terms with his sexuality now, but he’s not ready to sing it from the rooftops and is very shy about the truth, worried about what others might think or say; especially those who have known him for a long time already. Most of all, he’s scared of ruining the friendship he’s formed with Owen.
