Bryce was so glad Devon had taken a chance on him. He knew he could be a handful. He was annoying as hell more often than not and had a habit of toeing the line with his jokes. But he also knew how to tone it down, how to sit back and relax and see the world in a whole new light. The job they both did was a gruesome one, there was not way around it but at least for Bryce, Devon was the shining light in all that darkness. She kept him sane when he wondered why he kept doing the job he did. It was too hard some days to show up at those crime scenes and see the brutality. But he knew he was getting justice for those victims, giving them a voice when they no longer had one. And Devon was putting those criminals away when his work pointed to the right man. He tried to look at every case like that, disassociate himself from the pictures and evidence bags covering the tables in front of him but sometimes a little reinforcement was a good thing. Bryce chuckled and just shook his head. Their conversations had a habit of being very interesting and probably insane sounding if they were overheard.
It might have seemed like a spur-of-the-moment wedding with the proposal happening an hour before the nuptials but it was also fitting for Bryce and Devon. They weren't a normal couple, neither of them were looking for the big white wedding or the fancy reception or the two hours spent taking pictures just for that one perfect shot. Bryce couldn't care less if they got married wearing a Batman and Superwoman t-shirts, jeans and matching Chucks. In fact, that probably would have been just as fitting for them as this surprise wedding. But with their rings in hand, Bryce didn't care much what they were wearing, as long as the Justice of the Peace could marry them off quickly and they could get on with the rest of their lives. The honeymoon, the real one would have to wait for a bit yet but they could have their next few days in each other's arms and maybe even figure out what they're going to do about their living arrangements. Devon slept at his place more than her own these days but maybe they wanted to find a place that was theirs and hadn't just been his before this. It was something worth thinking about at least.
Bryce kissed his soon-to-be wife goodbye and headed up to the city hall building to start the process of getting hitched. There was paperwork that probably needed to be filled out ahead of time and Bryce wanted to get in and get going as soon as possible. He wanted to start the rest of his life already. He obviously got there ahead of Devon but his brother and sister-in-law had been waiting on him for a few minutes. That was fine as well. And a surprise had him grinning and hugging them both. They'd paid for the license for them to get married; their wedding gift to the happy couple. If Bryce was even a little bit girly, he might have broken down and cried right then and there but he was just too damn happy for that to ever happen. Bryce turned at Devon's voice a short time later and grinned pulling her into his side. "Absolutely not. Tatiana brought you flowers." He told her, kissing the temper. "You look stunning, by the way." he added, a second later. "Shall we get this party started?" He asked, reaching for her hand.

Bryce might have thought himself a handful, but Devon felt like he deserved a trophy for staying with her. She was a workaholic in a bad way. She could become so obsessed with the job that she didn’t know when to quit sometimes. Devon needed someone to drag her away from the precinct, to force her to switch off and forget about the monsters that were out there. She was so committed to locking them all up that she had a tough time knowing when she needed to walk away for her own wellbeing. Before Bryce it had been only the command of her Captain that could send her away, and even then Devon would work out, go over case details in her head and count down moments until she was heading back to her uniform and another patrol. It was an unhealthy obsession, a drive to one day see whoever killed her brother locked in prison. That drive was still there, but Devon had more to live for now. Bryce had given her that. He persuaded her stubborn ass to be reasonable, to stop clinging to the things she couldn’t change, and now she knew he was the man she never wanted to lose.
She understood that life could be shockingly short. The homicide they had both worked today was horrid proof of that, let alone everything else they saw on a regular basis. Devon couldn’t sit through months of planning and arranging some perfect day all while working a job where she spoke to families and people who would never see their loved ones through the same. That’s why this short and sweet ceremony would be the best for her. She could marry the man she was in love with and then get him home where she was sure she could enjoy being Mrs Pierce, even if the sound of the name still sounded so very strange to her. All the serious talk and planning about what came next could wait, at least for a day or two. It wasn’t like they were jetting off on a honeymoon – in fact the thought of one hadn’t even crossed Devon’s mind yet – and she was determined to at least celebrate with Bryce, even if their celebrations were a day in bed and ordering more Chinese than they could hope to eat.
Devon smiled up at Bryce and leaned naturally into his side like it was just where she belonged when he was around. “Good, because you know I hunt people down for a living.” She teased, before turning to Tatiana and taking the flowers from her. They were beautiful, and she said as much before hugging her in-laws to be. Devon felt the butterflies in her stomach, the excitement bubbling up now that they were actually at City Hall and just a very short time away from being husband and wife. “No way. You know how I feel about parties. Marriage, however, I’m pretty sure I’ve already agreed to that. Well, technically you agreed to it.” She joked, grinning before she tugged at his hand and pulled him through the door.

It was probably insane and they should both probably see a doctor about it but Bryce figured it could wait until after they'd exchanged I do's. He might be crazy but he wasn't stupid and was more than happy to lock Devon down before she changed her mind; even if she was technically the one to propose to him. Proposing had been in his plans in the near future, he had been looking for the perfect ring. In fact, he'd just settled on one and wanted his sister-in-law's opinion before he'd made the purchase but all that changed and that was absolutely fine with Bryce. He wanted to be married to Devon more than he wanted her to have the perfect ring. That could wait until they were married and he could really spoil her with something stunning and perfect. Right now he just wanted their names scribbled across the dotted lines of that paper, making everything official. And then he wanted to spend the next few days locked away in their apartment.
"So do I, Dear." He said right back to her with a laugh. Though technically he didn't do the chasing or hunting himself, he did all the behind-the-scenes work that allowed the men and women like Devon to actually do the hunting and the chasing. He preferred life in the lab over walking the streets as a beat cop. Honestly, he didn't know how Devon did it, Bryce just knew that he was one lucky son of a bitch for the bravest woman he knew to want to spend the rest of her days with his irritating ass. He wasn't about to ask her if she was serious one more time either, he'd learned that lesson after the first time. Nope, better to get her name on that marriage license and then tell her it's too late to change her mind. "Don't tell Fallon then." He teased because they both knew she would go overboard planning something because she enjoyed a good party and she seemed to love celebrating every milestone or achievement.
Bryce couldn't wait to get into that building and kept pace with his very soon-to-be bride as they rushed up the stairs and through the doors. With a quick glance at the floor directory, Bryce was leading the group up to the second floor and down the hall to the right office. He'd called ahead and spoke to a friend to have the whole process expedited so all he had to do was knock on the open door and walk into the next phase of their lives together. With words and rings exchanged and happy tears brightening their eyes, Bryce pulled Devon against him for their first kiss as husband and wife. "Hello, Mrs Pierce." he said a moment later, pulling away an inch or two.
