It was Seb's last night out before December 25th. It was also his first night out in a long while. He didn't really go out and party as much as he used to anymore, but with Matty staying over with a friend tonight he couldn't say no when an old buddy asked him to tag along. Seb had been hoping to take Matty back to Northern Ireland for a week to celebrate Christmas with the rest of their family, but the flights had been fully booked and the only other option would have been for both of them to take time away from their classes; something Seb didn't want for either of them. Christmas mattered, but their educations mattered even more. It would be their second winter without their parents and he knew it would be tough this time without the support of their relatives, but he was determined to make it a good Christmas. He had a tree up in the apartment, the necessities for a proper Christmas dinner already in the kitchen, and all of Matty's presents were hidden safely away. It wouldn’t be the same as flying back to County Antrim and seeing their old friends and family, but Seb was going to make it the next best thing.
For tonight though, he wasn't the responsible big brother who had to worry about everything like that. He was just Seb, out with a few friends, and remembering that he was only twenty-four. He could forget about the details and start remembering them again when the hangover wore off tomorrow and Matty came back home after lunch. Apparently, the plan for tonight was to start off on the campus, since this was the last night being held here until after the New Year, and then to hit up as many bars and clubs as they could until the last one of them hit the floor. Or they went home with some hot girl, whichever happened first. Seb could only laugh. His buddies really hadn't changed all that much. He missed nights like this from time to time, but he wouldn't swap video game nights with Matty for them, not in a million years. These nights were good, but those nights were even better.
Draining off the remainder of his beer, Seb glanced around the table and noticed that he was a little ahead of his friends, or behind, since he remembered that he had actually been the last to arrive since he was late dropping Matty off and then he had to get ready to come out. Heading to the bar, Seb pulled out his wallet and then ordered another bottle of beer. His eyes glanced around and he smirked when he saw a familiar face at the other end of the bar. Handing over the note and telling the bartender to keep the change, Seb headed down towards her and leaned in the spot next to her. "Anyone would think you were stalking me, Miss Sterling." He said teasingly close to her ear.

Lilia hadn’t been much for her birthday since she’d been a small child. It was so close to Christmas that it was ultimately just a hassle. She told her friends, but only when they asked and she never expected a gift or anything special for the day and was genuinely surprised when her friends produced a birthday gift for her. Her parents had always made a show of celebrating her birthday separately from the holiday but it had never really mattered to Lilia. Too often when she’d been smaller, she would pout about it and demand to switch birthdays with Alan because his wasn’t around a holiday like hers or even Theo’s. But these days, for Lilia it was just another day, no different from any others. And that was why she had intended on spending it with Theo and Issy at home and then study. Classes were through until after the New Year rolled in but she wanted to be on top of it all since she was so determined to be at the top of her class.
And she was all geared for her plans, even excited to have the small celebration with Theo and Issy. Issy gave her a little charm for her bracelet and Theo gave her the new pair of boots she'd been hinting at for a while. They'd ordered take out and picked up a cake and it was fun. Up until Cooper showed up at Theo's insistence to drag the birthday girl out for a night on the town. Cooper had made some calls on her way to Lilia's, much to the birthday girl’s annoyance. She showed up, demanded Lilia get ready and was already texting her address to one of her friends, something about picture proof later on. Lilia wasn't honestly listening. She was too annoyed at the idea that she couldn't hang around her house to listen to the ramblings of her English colleague. Wrapped in a towel, Lilia was finishing up her hair and taking a second look at her makeup when Coop's friend, another girl L I Lia had hung out with before burst into the bathroom. The Irish girl, Jack waved Lilia being in the room away before stealing some space in the mirror and apologizing about how she needed to check her face. Lilia chuckled, understanding the need to double check her look and moved on to her bedroom to slip into the dress she'd picked out before she'd run to the bathroom.
When she was ready, she reminded Theo she had her phone, just in case anything happened, though she was aware nothing would and allowed herself to be dragged from her home, into the street of New York for some birthday fun by her fellow foreigners. They were quite the group, and all they needed was someone from Northern Ireland and someone from Wales and they would be all set! As far as Lilia knew, it was just going to be the three of them, however when they got to the school campus, Coop and Jay had a couple more people waiting for them. The plan was to drink their way through the city and enjoy the night. It didn’t matter that of them, Lilia was pretty sure she was one of the only two in their small group that was legal old enough to drink in America. But hey, if they didn’t get caught, who was she going to tell? They were gathered to celebrate her birthday after all, even if Coop had said something about how she hadn’t known or there would have been better plans. Lilia didn’t care, and by the time they’d gotten to their first stop, she was genuinely excited about the night out.
Jay offered the first round and they went around with shots and drinks alike, easily crossing their first stop off their list. The night was still young, especially by New York standards and Lilia had a feeling she wouldn’t be allowed to even suggest crashing out until the sun was starting to rise. She offered to get the next round and instead of waiting for a waitress to pass by, grabbed her clutch and hit the bar. She had just given the bartender her order and was waiting for the drinks to be mixed and handed over when she heard a familiar voice in her ear. That alone wasn’t anything surprising, it was a student hangout, she was a student, she probably knew more people in the building than she realised. But this particular voice was one she couldn’t ignore. “I’d think it would be the other way around. After all, why would a pretty young thing like me, who only needs to bat her lashes at someone to have them falling all over her need to stalk the likes of you?” She asked, batting her lashes at him in pure innocence.

Christmas for Seb meant large family gatherings and outrageous stories. He had roped his father into crazy stunts every year for as long as he had been able to, from stupid things like the cinnamon challenge to bigger things like going sledging down the hills near their home on Christmas morning. This year her could only hope to talk Matty into doing something. It was only their second Christmas without their parents. The first had been surrounded by family and Seb suspected that they'd feel it really hit this year, but he was also determined to not let the day be marred with such grief and sorrow. He might not be able to do much, but he was going to do what he could to make the day decent.
With his role at Matty's guardian it was easy to forget about the life he had lived before the tragedy. It had been near impossible to catch Seb at home. There was always a party somewhere, a study session that would end at a bar, out just a group of friends who wanted to hit the city and dance until the sun came up. That had been Seb's crowd from the moment he had touched down in New York. Tonight he was remembering that, but at the same time he was completely aware of the responsibilities that were going to be his again come tomorrow. He was a different man now, a better man, though he wished it hadn’t taken a tragedy to bring that out of him. His good intentions had always been there, but he’d had a wild streak a mile wide that no one could real control. Parties, weekends heading out of town, it had been a wonder his grades had remained so good for those first two years of college when he was such a flighty guy. Still, none of that mattered now. His head was screwed on properly and Seb was focused on being the best he could be for Matty’s sake. He wanted to be able to provide for his little brother as well as being a model influence for him to look up to. It was all fine partying and living recklessly when Matty wasn’t around to see it or to rely on him, but that wasn’t the case anymore.
However, while Seb wanted his little brother to grow up to be the best he could be, he didn’t want Matty to be all work and no play; everyone needed to let their hair down every once in a while. Plus, Seb was a realist. He knew that there would come a day when he would witness Matty’s first hangover, pick him up from a party and see him trying to hide his drunkenness. He wasn’t a fool; he had been there and done it all himself. Part of him was looking forward to ridiculing Matty when it happened, tormenting him in a way that only a big brother could do. After all, that was the point of everything. Seb was his brother, not his parent. He wouldn’t reprimand him for something he had done himself. He could only advise, guide as best as he could, and do what he hoped would have pleased his parents, wherever they might be. Matty was already getting quicker with the quips, just like Seb. It was starting to look like a few more years might turn him into a mini version of the man himself.
Grinning, Seb leaned back against the bar, drink in hand. “Because a pretty young thing like you can’t seem to keep yourself away from the likes of me.” He answered simply, a cheeky glint in his eyes. Teasing Lilia was far too easy, and far too enjoyable. “You know you can’t resist my charm.” He added casually.

Like any other adult, Lilia had responsibilities she needed to take care of before she did anything else; which she did. She purposefully said no to this and that just so she could get those things done. She took time for herself but not nearly enough which is why she suspected her brother called her friend up. With Coop and Jay in her house, rummaging through her clothes for the perfect outfit, she couldn’t very well say she couldn’t go out. Theo telling Coop it was her birthday had made the other girl’s stubborn level go up about two hundred percent. And after that, well there had been no way Lilia was getting out of the night on the town. She hadn’t really minded all that much once she was getting ready and had a drink while she was doing it.
It really did beat sitting at home when she thought about it. But her birthday wasn’t all that important to the Scottish girl, so she wouldn’t have cared either way; not really. She didn’t tell anyone and the only reason she found herself in her boss’s office saying thanks for the happy wishes and accepting a gift card as a present was because the day was on file in her paperwork. If she could have left it out and just given them an age, she would have. But sadly, that was not the way workplaces did things. And as long as no one made a big fuss over it, Lilia didn’t much care. And she could have gone the rest of her life with her friends not knowing either. It was cool that they knew and wanted to celebrate and all but Lilia hadn’t had it in her to do much of anything usually since she’d been younger. And now she was old enough, she could party anytime and make up some stupid excuse for it in the morning.
But being out with friends did get her mind off the fact that she wasn’t home this year for Christmas, opting instead to stick around and help Theo start some new traditions with Issy. Maybe the following year she’d go home again, celebrate with her parents and the friends that stuck around their hometown. It was a thought at least and one she would entertain in a few more months when she really had to decide and purchase a plane ticket. For the night, she would forget everything and just be a young woman in her twenties, enjoying a night out. Seeing Seb at the bar was a bit of a shock, Lilia hadn’t realised Matty hadn’t been home. She knew Seb and knew without a doubt that he wouldn’t have gone off for a night out if his little brother had nowhere to go. But talking serious wasn’t really their thing. If they could put a little something in between teases and taunts they did but otherwise it was jokes that were cracked in the hopes of getting the best of the other.
Lilia loved playing their little games. It kept her distracted from whatever she might have been doing. She could only be grateful for those stolen moments when she was hard at work at the hospital and drowning in it. Lilia let out an unladylike snort, rolling her eyes. “Oh yes, you’re just so irresistible to me. It’s a wonder I can keep my hands off you.” She said as blandly as she could. “Charm my arse. You’ve about as much charm as Barty Crouch Jr.” She said with a tone that said there wasn’t any room to argue. She was well aware he would try to argue his side of the point and she couldn’t wait to see what he came up with. Lilia turned when the bartender stepped up to the bar in front of them, setting down her order. “Thanks.” She said, opening her clutch to collect the proper bills.

Seb had sacrificed so much for his little brother already, but he knew that he couldn’t sacrifice everything. He might feel guilty when he did hand the responsibility of caring for Matty over to a babysitter every once in a while, but Seb was still young and he still had a life of his own to live. He was entitled to the rare night out to blow off some steam once in a blue moon. Matty would always come first, at least until he was old enough to look after himself, but Seb still had friends and a social life that called to him now and then. He turned down more invitations than he accepted, but with the holiday season and his end of year bonus sitting nicely in his bank account he felt like he had deserved one night on the town with his buddies. It was just the perfect coincidence that Matty had asked to stay at a friends this evening and saved Seb the trouble of having to organise for someone to look after the young boy.
It would be more difficult after college when Seb was actually working full time as a nurse. It might be his dream come true to help those on the wards of the hospital who needed his care and attention, but with the shift patterns he wouldn’t be around as much for Matty. It was something he thought about frequently, but wouldn’t let himself worry about until the time actually came. It wasn’t as though he could arrange anything now ready for when it came around. He still had another year and a half before graduation, and even then there was no guarantee that he’d fall straight into the job he wanted, though Seb did have his fingers crossed. Matty would of course be older by then, but he still wouldn’t be old enough to leave alone for hours on end, especially if Seb found himself handed the night shifts. Right now if he was working late evenings their dear old neighbour didn’t mind keeping an eye on the twelve year old, but Seb didn’t want to burden her in the future when their situation inevitably changed.
Although it didn’t seem like Seb was the kind of guy to stress out or worry about things, he did fret about the future. Taking in his brother after the loss of their parents had been a big deal, and it had changed so much. He hadn’t realised just how much at first, and as things slowly started to dawn on him, he realised more and more just how many things they still had to face up to. Most of it was in regards to Matty growing up. There might have been years in it, but Seb could recall just how fast those teenage years flew by. He had a list tucked away in one of the kitchen drawers that he added to whenever he or Matty thought of something else they would one day have to deal with. It helped, even if they never really looked at that list again for months. It was a way of striking a balance between his own life and the life he led as the guardian of his little brother.
Resting his elbows against the bar, Seb grinned and leaned in close to Lilia’s side. There was a cheeky glint in his deep blue eyes, and his usual mischievous mood was taking him back to one very specific memory that they shared. “But you can’t keep your hands off me. We both know that by now.” He teased, whispering his words close to her ear. They’d avoided it, but Seb was certain that had been because every other time since then there had been Matty, Issy, or both around. It was hardly a conversation for little ears. It was hardly a conversation for The Lounge bar either, but this was better than ignoring it any longer, and Lilia had set herself up so perfectly for it. “Past evidence begs to differ. I’d put it to a jury, but I’m not one to kiss and tell, are you?” He raised his eyebrows and awaited her answer, though he already knew what it would be. Seb took the radio silence since that night of pizza, video games and heavy petting as proof of that. Plus, no one had cornered him to ask if it was true, so he figured Lilia had kept the details to herself. If she hadn’t then he might have also received a visit from her big brother by now, if what she said about the infamous Theo was in fact true.

Even though Lilia had a ton of responsibilities, she still made the time to let her hair down; mostly because Theo practically forced her to act her age every once in a while. He thought she took enough time to be an adult when she’d moved and she thought she’d taken enough time to party when she’d run off to Barcelona and everything else. Still, she needed to keep occupied and sitting at home with her textbooks would have only succeeded in her reading chapters ahead and nothing more; which would have been fine with her. She had already taken that year off and spent her free time through that reading ahead. So really, she didn’t need to even read her textbooks but it was good to keep the information fresh in her mind. She was going to be a doctor. That meant she would have people’s lives in her hands and that was a daunting thought. Lilia didn’t want to screw up.
However, she’d been lucky so far. She’d had excellent grades and her year away hadn’t lost her any marks like she’d thought it would. She was still at the top of her class, even if she spent more time being the best aunt she could be than she did studying. Lilia was a smart girl. She had always known what she wanted from life when it came to her career. She had read more medical books before she turned seventeen than most of the medical students had. Lilia liked to be informed; she liked to know everything she could about things she was passionate about. She was passionate about medicine and therefore had spent quite a bit of time, reading over medical journals a girl her age had no business reading.
Lilia quirked her brow towards her hairline, looking at Seb. “If I recall correctly, you started that.” She said, pointedly. It wasn’t like Lilia was avoiding what had happened between them, she wasn’t. It was just that whenever they were together after that, they’d not be alone. And it was difficult to talk with kids around. Issy might not have understood but she was also a hyper, curious toddler. It was a workout just keeping her sitting on a chair long enough to eat, never mind keeping her occupied long enough to have a conversation. And the hospital wasn’t the place to have a conversation like that so she just hadn’t bothered, and neither, apparently had Seb. It was bound to come up eventually but until it did, Lilia had been perfectly content to let it be. “Since you haven’t been hounded by Nell or any of the other nurses or been visited by Theo after being told by one of those two at my table, no, I’m not.” She said blandly. With her tab settled with the bartender, Lilia wished she’d added another drink to her list; a strong shot because she was going to need it when she got back to her table and the questions began.

His wild days of partying were behind him, though a few people around the campus still knew him for the antics he had once gotten up to. They were stories that Matty might hear when he was a lot older and perhaps living a college experience full of parties and foolish mistakes, too. Until then though, Seb would like to keep it so that only those who had been there, done that, and shared the hangover with him knew the truth about what he had been doing when he had moved stateside. It wasn’t like those things would be happening again any time soon. Even tonight, Seb would be a hell of a lot tamer than the boy he had been at the start of his college life. He knew he had responsibilities to get back to in the morning, and there wasn’t a chance in hell of him spending the day in bed nursing a hangover and not caring about whatever the world had to throw at him. That sort of thing was in his past now. Seb couldn’t really say he missed it either. It had been fun back then, but it was something to grow out of – something he had grown out of - and not something he intended to revisit.
Now he just wanted to focus on his future and Matty’s. Seb wanted to ensure that his little brother had the life his parents would have wanted for him. It was the least he could do now. So far he thought he was doing a pretty decent job with all things considered, but right now Matty was still at a young age where he was easy to please and not everything came down to a big spending spree. Seb knew only too well how that would change in a few years. He also would hazard a guess that New York would be a hell of a lot more costly than Belfast and Antrim had been. Seb hoped by then that he’d have secured a nursing job and have some more stability in his life. As much as he enjoyed college, right now it was merely a series of stepping stones to get to where he really wanted to be. If he had the time to spare he might’ve tried to fast track through the last two years, but Seb simply hadn’t had that free time to dedicate. He barely had the time to sleep these days as it was.
Smirking, Seb lifted his gaze to meet Lilia’s. “I don’t remember you complaining. Or stopping it for that matter.” He leaned against the bar and thought back to that night. It seemed so long ago now, but he suspected it felt that way because they hadn’t been able to talk about it since it happened. “In fact, you were quite keen from what I can recall.” He grinned, because what man wouldn’t be smiling at the memory of a woman like Lilia being into him, and on him. He shrugged lightly and then paused, taking a mouthful of his drink before his continued. “Or maybe they’re just so bored of watching this little dance between us that they’re not bothering to chase around the gossip. I’ve been told it happens in the world of girls.” He said, raising his eyebrows like someone who was in the know. “And as for your brother, I would suspect you’d keep such things quiet from him. I can’t really know for sure since I have a wee brother and he’s not ashamed to tell me a damn thing, but again, I’ve been told.” Seb took another sip of his drink and leaned against the bar, the wooden top pushing against his spine rather comfortably in a spot that had ached after hours of being hunched over a desk studying that afternoon.

Lilia's life wasn't always all about her next passing grade though it was a big part of it. She'd already spent too much time away from school and though it had been an excellent cause, she wanted to catch up, get her residency out of the way and become a proper doctor. She couldn't do that if she was running all over the city, hitting up the clubs like she was some sort of heiress who could live off the family fortune until the day she died. She had to work her ass off and that meant staying home more nights than going out. She didn't actually mind it; especially since it meant she got to sit with her little baby niece, surrounded by textbooks and toys. They did more playing than she did studying during the first hour or so but she did what she needed to and wouldn't change any nights she spent in. They were usually filled with laughter and her phone filling with even more pictures of her adorable niece than it already had.
But she did love her nights out, too. She got to relax, have fun and remind herself that she wasn't some homebody, or someone who always had a plan. There was no such thing as a plan when you went out. You had an idea but it never went that way; ever. And as much as she liked having a plan, she loved the chaos these nights usually descended into. She didn't know where she was going to find herself when the sun found its way into the sky once more. She didn't know if like the last time she would be walking home from her friend's place in her sweats and a borrowed pair of shoes because she'd lost one of her favourites sometime through the busy night they'd had; or if there would be half as many pictures as there seemed to be when they woke up in the morning. Though that one was usually only when Jack was around. Even drinking, she managed to have her camera at the ready for the best possible times, drink her weight in hard liquor and still manage to stay upright in her higher than skyscraper heels. The tiny Irish girl was Lilia's hero some nights.
But tonight was about Lilia and celebrating her birthday with her friends and reminding herself she wasn't some crazy old cat lady just yet; she was only in her twenties, she had plenty of time before she needed to seriously start thinking about the number of cats she wanted to eat her decaying body at the end of her life. "Don't have to stop what won't go anywhere." She pointed out. They had gotten a little ahead of themselves and they both knew they shouldn't have; not with Matty in the next room, playing video games. She didn't add that she had wanted things to go the way they had started to. Seb had a big enough ego without her adding to it. Lilia smiled slowly, leaning closer to Seb and running her hand down his arm. "You could always give them something to gossip about." She said softly, leaning up to whisper in his ear. Though he was right about Theo. The second her big brother heard anything about the possibility of even a kiss on the cheek, he wouldn't be to pleased with the idea; nevermind when he found out what had actually transpired between them. And God forbid an actual relationship started between her and Seb! She was half way to a convent as it was, she really didn't need the help getting there. Issy was either in excellent hands when she got older or her poor brother was in for one hell of a rebellious stage with his little girl.

Becoming Matty’s guardian had been one hell of a reality check for Seb. It wasn’t like he was struggling with making passing grades before then, but he was one hell of a party boy and he would easily blow off a study session for a party someone was throwing elsewhere in the city. It was easy to see the improvement in his essays and his exam results since the little boy had moved into the small apartment with the Irishman. The hours that Seb would have spent in a bar had instead been spent at home, and there was little to do there once Matty was in bed. The video games were a thing they enjoyed together, and whenever Seb tried playing them alone, Matty had slipped out and come to bug him to see what he was doing. In the end he had to quit altogether to get the little boy to go to sleep. Late night television was unappealing and after that all he had left were his textbooks. Studying had started out as something he did because he had nothing better to do, but now it was obviously what he did because Seb wanted to do well at college. He wanted to be a good influence for Matty, and show him that they could still get far, even with the hand fate had dealt them.
They still had their fun though. Never in a million years could Seb be the type who was a bookworm, studying non-stop and aiming to be the best all the time in the world of academia. Whenever he had sat an exam or handed in an essay, all he wanted was a beer and the chance to kick back with some friends. He was young and while he might have had a ton of responsibilities not shared by his classmates, he still wanted to have the kind of fun that so many people only ever had when they were in their twenties. Tonight was a slightly different thing, since Seb didn’t have to be home at a certain time for Matty or worry about having things to do. He could hang out with his friends, get drunk if the mood took him to do so, and wake up tomorrow to regret it all. It was one of the rarer opportunities he had these days, which was why he wasn’t going to waste it by going home early if someone else couldn’t handle their shots, or wanted to be up early for some reason or another.
Seb knew that the evening with Lilia on his couch had gotten a little out of hand, but he couldn’t find it in him to regret it. He knew they ought to have behaved better with Matty being in the next room, alert and awake, but Seb didn’t want to. He was cheeky and terrible, and he had loved seeing Lilia all flustered and stunned into silence. Normally their flirty comments were like this; somewhere public, when they had other people to entertain, or places to be. “Not then it didn’t. But we both know it’s not finished.” He was pushing, he wasn’t even going to pretend that he wasn’t. Seb had already had a few drinks, and he was feeling cheekier than usual. He was also aware that tonight he didn’t have to worry about playing the role of responsible big brother. “If we go down that road, they’ll be talking about how you ditched them so early on in the evening to spend your time with the sexy Irishman.” He warned her, leaning in close and whispering his words just a hairsbreadth away from her lips. He was through playing coy now. He had done this dance with Lilia for months, and while it was fun, there was a part of him that wanted to know if that was all it was.

Lilia did't do a lot for herself simply because she didn't have the time to. She would have rather spend her time doing things that needed to be done than do things that would only benefit her. Besides that, she hated getting her nails done; especially since she had a steady hand and was quite capable of painting her own nails. She wasn't overly fond of spending the day shopping either. Shopping trips usually led her to feeling bad about her body because she was between sizes and everything was either the tiniest bit too big or too small. She wasn't a big girl to begin with so it annoyed her even more. At least she could say she was on the same level as them, even if none of them would have believed her. No, her life revolved around things that mattered. Making sure Issy was cared for when Theo had a late rehearsal and couldn't be there for his little girl, the house she shared with her brother and niece was clean and there was food on the table for them all to eat were more important than if she'd picked up the latest copy of Comso. The most selfish thing she did couldn't even be considered selfish since getting good grades and passing all her classes meant shew as closer to becoming a full-fledged doctor and helping to save lives!
This night out hadn't even been her idea. She would have been perfectly content to spend the day like she did any other, at home with Issy, watching something childish in the background to please the little girl while her textbooks scattered around them temporarily forgotten because Issy wanted to play with her toys. But Theo had the night off, a rarity and so he'd been home. And he refused to let his little sister waste an excellent excuse to party and remind herself she wasn't so old she couldn't any more. Lilia wasn't so caught up with her birthday since it was so close to Christmas but Theo didn't seem to think that was a good enough excuse. And so she was out with her friends. It wasn't the worst way to spend a night but she really didn't want the reason to be her birthday. She wasn't fond of it and felt like there were far better reasons out there to spend a night dancing and having a few drinks with friends.
Lilia raised her brow, looking over at Seb. "Isn't it?" She asked. She didn't drink very often, she was uisually too busy being behiknd the bar to enjoy the party happening in front of it. With Seb more than anyone, she'd always been a little cheekier than usual anyway. And now she'd only had one drink but then again Lilia had never really needed alcohol to say what she wanted to anyone. With alcohol, the cheeky behaviour just happened to get a little bit worse. "Oh shut up and kiss me already." She said, brushing off every plan that was made for the night. She hadn't made the plans, stopping to get her was just an add on that Coop and Jay had done so Lilia wasn't spending her birthday sitting at home with her brother and niece surrounded by textbooks like she did almost every other night. They said all work and no play made for some dull people. Lilia was hardly dull but she did stay in a lot. She was tired of playing these games with Seb. There was something there between them, all their flirty banterw made it obvious. But Lilia wanted to know if there was more to it than that, if there was something else and if there was, she wanted to know what it was. It was about time they did something for themsevles, even if it did turn into a major disaster; at least they could say they tried, right?

Seb had never been the type to focus entirely on himself. Even growing up he had done his fair share around the family home to help his mam out, or to earn himself some pocket money. His parents explained to both him and Matty that it was that sort of thing that would shape them into good men in later life, and Seb was inclined to agree. He was definitely more helpful and caring because of the way his mother raised him. He knew that if she had ever thought that he had been rude or cruel to someone, she would have him for the worst kind of punishment she could cook up. Many people thought her a mellow woman, but Seb knew that beneath that exterior there was a fierce lady who would never let her boys grow into callous men. Thankfully, that had never happened to Seb, and Matty wouldn’t get a chance to turn to the dark side either. Seb might have been his guardian but he was raising him as a brother, and by that line of thought, he was capable of shaming the little fool into behaving if it ever came to it. He had the baby photos in a box in his wardrobe, just in case they were ever needed.
Matty was already a good kid though, so he was doubting that it would come to that. Hell, he was a damn sight better behaved than Seb was at that age, even if Seb had been able to talk his way out of most of the trouble he had landed himself in before word made it back to his parents. He didn’t know what Matty would be like by the time he was in college, but he couldn’t picture his brother as the wild party boy he himself had been just a short while ago. Matty could have fun, but he wasn’t quite as confident or as outgoing as his older brother, and Seb knew the loss of their parents was partly responsible for that. No kid could go through that without coming out the other side changed. Matty was doing well, but Seb knew he could be doing better, just like he could be too. He focused on Matty, and on school so that he didn’t really have to dwell on everything that had gone by. It was working for him, but it wouldn’t work forever. Tonight was not the time to be thinking about that though, and he drank from his beer bottle whenever the thoughts, or anything remotely close to them, crept into his consciousness.
Lilia’s presence kept them all at bay though. She always brought out Seb’s worst side; his flirtatious side. It was like he didn’t know how to stop when she was around. Not that Lilia ever did anything to suggest she wanted him to stop. From his point of view she only ever goaded him into pushing more, testing that barely existent line between them to see if it was really there at all. These days he was starting to think it wasn’t, especially not after the night at his apartment. “If it was we wouldn’t be having this conversation.” Seb said simply, giving Lilia a knowing look. He couldn’t even remember when they had started this flirtatious banter, but he knew it had gone on for too long without any result and that night had been cut short because of a thirteen year old boy in the adjoining room. Seb wasn’t about to let it go now. Grinning, Seb reached out and wrapped his hand around Lilia’s hip and pulled her closer. “With pleasure.” He whispered before he pressed his lips firmly against hers. He wasn’t playing any warm up game this time. He knew what he wanted, what she wanted, and he wasn’t wasting time getting to it. Squeezing her side, he pulled her as close as possible, moving his other hand up her arm to rest at her neck. Breaking apart the kiss, he looked at her and raised his eyebrows. “Are we really going to make out in a student bar?” He asked, not particularly wanting to feed the pack of ridiculous college kids with a show. That wasn’t his style, and The Lounge wasn’t packed enough yet for them to slip discreetly away into a corner for a while.

If there had been any way of getting out celebrating her birthday, Lilia would have in a heartbeat. She wasn’t all that pleased with the day, mostly because of how close it was to the holiday but she was always pulled into doing something for it so it was difficult to get away from it. Of course, this time around, if she’d managed to get away from the night, she wouldn’t have run into Seb and spent a fair amount of time flirting with him. Instead, she would have been at home, gorging herself on bad romantic comedy movies, popcorn and cake until well after the clock struck twelve and the day changed. But the only way that would ever happen for Lilia was if she`moved somewhere without her family. New York still had Theo who would show up on her doorstep and force her out if she didn’t live with him so in that aspect, it was easier to share a house with her actor brother than to live across town; it made babysitting her adorable niece so much easier, too.
The day would eventually come when that would have to happen but neither of them seemed to be in a rush to kick their little sister out or tell their older brother she needed her own place. The house was quite large, easily accommodating everyone with each having their own space and the common areas. Theo had never made Lilia feel like she wasn’t wanted or like she needed to tiptoe around and treat the house like she was a guest and not a welcome member of the home. Days like these, where Theo thought his little sister needed to get out and have a bit of a life said little sister could live without. But saying as much only ever led to looks that said not to mess with him. So like tonight, she sighed and went about getting ready, purposefully leaving her textbooks and things scattered where she’d left them for him to deal with or leave there.
And that had been how she’d found herself at the first bar of the night, thinking how much she hated when her brother was right. Lilia smirked at Seb but didn’t say a word, there was nothing else to say. They’d been having this back and forth for too long and it had only gone the slightest bit further that night before they were interrupted and the mood sufficiently killed; which was fine by Lilia because they should have known better than to start something like that with Seb’s little brother in the next room. She didn’t have to wait long after her words left her mouth before he was happily obliging them. They’d been playing this game for long enough now and though it was fun, there was only so much a girl could take. Lilia was pleasantly surprised by the possessive hold Seb had on her, though she could do little more than curl her fingers into his sides, holding herself closer to him. It was over far too soon and Seb was pulling away. “Um, no. I don’t much feel like putting on a show.” She said, turning to the bartender. She leaned over the bar to talk to him and slid back when he nodded, taking her drinks, minus one with him over to her table. He’d left her the pornstar shot she’d ordered for herself, which she quickly tossed back.

Seb didn’t know if a permanent return to Northern Ireland was on the cards. He honestly couldn’t say. All he knew was that when his parents had died and Mattie had needed him, he had needed New York. Not only was it where he was attending college, but it was a break away from the relatives who were fussing over the brothers and constantly checking to see if every little thing was okay. Seb knew that he could take care of his wee brother. He had been nervous as hell about the responsibility of the guardianship, but he still knew that at the end of the day he could handle it. It was what his parents would have wanted and he didn’t want to leave Mattie in the care of one of their Aunts, who meant well but would probably smother him for the next seven years until it was time for him to run off to university, too – if that was what Mattie chose to do with his life. Seb would offer him all the advice that he could, and try to encourage him to be the best he could be, but he wouldn’t force Mattie to make a choice he wasn’t happy with, or be something he didn’t want to be.
It was very rare for Seb to do anything without thinking of Mattie first. He had picked his job at Tribeca based on him, chose his favourites when it came to the shopping, and sacrificed most of his social life to spend time with Mattie or drive him from friend’s and pick him up later. Tonight was a rarity, even more so when Seb wasn’t drinking with his friends and checking his phone for any text messages. Hell, he wasn’t even thinking about his friends anymore! They were on the other side of the student bar, having passed a few comments about the missing Irish man. They’d seen him flirting with Lilia though, and left him to it while they started up a darts competition, the loser of which was supposed to be buying in the next round of drinks. Seb couldn’t care less about what they were doing though, not when he had Lilia in front of him, dressed to kill, and they were so close to that night again – the night that ultimately hadn’t been.
Seb grinned, chuckling deeply at her response and held her tight. He let his lips brush against the side of her head before he reached for his own drink, taking a long gulp of it before tilting Lilia’s chin upwards so he could steal another kiss; a short, quick one this time. “Want to get out of here?” He asked, his fingers skimming up and then back down her side, resting on her lip. “My place is empty. Mattie’s out at a pal’s tonight. Sleepover.” He suggested with a small smile. Seb wasn’t actually hinting at anything, but he did want to carry on kissing Lilia, but without an audience would be nice. He didn’t know too many places in New York City where they wouldn’t be disturbed.

Lilia wasn’t opposed to spending her nights out, just was just a little bit rare that she had weekends off. She was a bartender after all and though technically she worked at a restaurant, it was New York and the bar was open late. Nothing in the city closed early but with her classes and volunteer hours at the hospital, she habitually took the shifts less desired so she could actually put in the hours to work. There was always a lot on her plate, Lilia enjoyed keeping busy but then she’d always been that way. She had never really been able to settle, often as a child rolling around in her sleep, arms and legs kicking out at all corners. These days it only happened with bad dreams because she did so much through the day that her body was physically exhausted and her mind actually shut off. So nights out like this didn’t really happen often and when they did, Lilia tended to run a little extreme. She wanted to dance and drink and laugh without having to bat her eyelashes a little softer, flirt a little more to get a decent tip.
Those nights out though, usually didn’t result in meeting up with any men, or going home with any of them either. She wasn’t that kind of girl. She had nothing against them of course, they were their own people but she just couldn’t do it. Besides that, she was already on the confused side with whatever she had with Seb and adding to that, even if they were nothing at all would just make matters worse. She didn’t think they were nothing of course, if it was, the ridiculous flirting and teasing they did wouldn’t happen to the extent that it did, escalating every time they were in the same room together. She could only imagine what it would be like working with him in hospital when they both got there; providing they ended up at the same hospital. It was either going to be one the reasons to get there early or the worst hours of the day. Either way, it was going to be one extreme or the other.
The best thing about going out with the friends she did, they didn’t really worry much if she ran off. She received text messages from a couple of them but since this time around she was standing at the bar, flirting with Seb, Lilia knew there would be no text messages until well into the afternoon the next day. Lilia smirked, nodded her head at Seb’s question. There was no point in saying no, it would have been a lie and they both knew it. Though his request on the other hand had her itching to say something. And she never passed up the opportunity. “Sleepover, like pillow fights in skimpy pyjamas?” She asked, biting her bottom lip, looking up at him. “Well, how could I say no to that?” She asked, teasing him.

Seb used to be quite the party animal before he has custody of Mattie. That wasn’t a life he bothered to hide from anyone, not even his little brother. It had just been how he had been able to spend his social time back then. He didn’t miss it, not really. It was tiring, came with too many hangovers and the kind of mistakes friends never let him live down. However, Seb still enjoyed a night out when he could have one, which was usually only whenever Mattie had plans to stay at a friend’s house and his own workload wasn’t weighing down on him. He had never liked getting a babysitting in just so he could have a night in a bar. It always seemed like he was slacking off on his own responsibilities. No, Mattie only stayed with someone else for a few hours when Seb had to work late at Tribeca and there was no other way around it. He was a rather proud man and he wouldn’t let his brother or his late parents down. He was going to turn Mattie into someone they could all be proud of, even after everything he had come from back in Northern Ireland.
Tonight though, those responsibilities and thoughts of the future were a way back in Seb’s mind. He wasn’t near drunk yet, but he was definitely enjoying himself and Lilia coming into the student bar had definitely changed a few things in regards to his plans. In the past there was always some reason why they had never moved beyond their shameless flirting. It was usually the sound of someone who shouldn’t be hearing things beyond a PG-13 rating, but tonight there was no need to worry about anything like that. He didn’t know for sure what Lilia wanted from them, but he had a strong feeling that she wasn’t going to push him away or slap him for anything he said or did. They had come too far now for him to be misinterpreting the signs between them. It was more a matter of finally.
Smirking, Seb leaned in a little closer to Lilia. “Do what you want with the pillows, and I hate to be the one to tell you this, but I don’t sleep in pyjamas. Though with you around I don’t plan on getting much sleep.” He taunted in a low voice, his blue eyes glinting with a mischievous look. He glanced around, but his buddied were engrossed in a drinking game and Seb didn’t feel like heading over there to tell them he was bailing early. They’d figure it out sooner or later and he’d answer the questions and text messages tomorrow. “Come on then. Let’s make a move.” He grabbed Lilia’s hand and pulled her away from the bar. There were always cabs outside waiting to take eager students into the heart of the city, but he gave the driver the address of his own apartment, checking his pocket to make sure he actually had his key and none of his friends had stolen it from him at some point as a daft prank. It was still there, right where it ought to be, thank god.
